A process for making linear alkyl aromatics is described. The process involves preparing the paraffin feed by dehydrogenating normal paraffins, selectively hydrogenating any diolefins, and adsorbing any aromatics to form an olefin feed. The olefin feed is contacted with an aromatic feed in the presence of an ionic liquid catalyst to form a mixture of alkylated aromatics. The ionic liquid catalyst is separated from the mixture of alkylated aromatics by gravity, and any ionic liquid retained in the alkylated aromatics is removed by adsorption or extraction. The mixture of alkylated aromatics is then separated into monoalkylated aromatics and dialkylated aromatics.

Embodiments of methods for production of linear alkylbenzene and optionally biofuel from natural oil are provided. Natural oils are deoxygenated to form a stream comprising paraffins. A first portion of the paraffins are dehydrogenated to provide mono-olefins. Then, benzene is alkylated with the mono-olefins under alkylation conditions to provide an alkylation effluent comprising alkylbenzenes and benzene. Thereafter, the alkylbenzenes are isolated to provide the alkylbenzene product. Optionally, a second portion of the paraffins may be processed to form biofuel.

A method of producing a linear alkylbenzene that includes introducing an olefin into an aromatic stream to form a mixture; processing the mixture in a shear device at a shear rate greater than about 20,000 s−1 to form a dispersion; and reacting the dispersion in the presence of a catalyst in a reactor vessel to form a linear alkylbenzene product stream, wherein the reactor vessel is maintained at a bulk reaction temperature in the range of about 0° C. to about 60° C.

A process is presented for the preparation of surfactants that are useable in enhanced oil recovery. The surfactants are long chained sulfonated alkylaryl compounds. The process includes recovering linear and lightly branched paraffins from a hydrocarbon stream, dehydrogenating the paraffins, and then alkylating benzene with the olefins generated. The process uses pentasil zeolites to selectively separate the normal and lightly branched paraffins from the hydrocarbon stream.

A method of modifying a ZSM-5-type zeolite catalyst to increase selectivity of the catalyst for para-isomers in aromatic alkylation reactions is provided. The method includes contacting a ZSM-5-type zeolite catalyst with a fluoride-containing compound. The fluoride-containing zeolite catalyst can be used in aromatic alkylation to provide di-alkyl aromatic products. A method of preparing a xylene product is also accomplished by providing a fluoride-treated ZSM-5-type zeolite catalyst within a reactor. The fluoride-treated ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst is contacted with a toluene/methanol feed under reaction conditions conditions suitable for toluene methylation to form a xylene product containing at least 50% para-xylene by total mixed xylenes.
