The amount of Group-V element included in a melt 6 has the close relationship with the oxygen concentration of the melt 6. This relationship is utilized for controlling the oxygen concentration of a single crystal 8 at a high level. The content of Group-V element is calculated from the weight of the melt 6 gauged by a gravimeter 11 and compared with a preset value in a control unit 12. When the calculated content is smaller than the preset value, the control signal to additionally supply Group-V element to the melt 6 is outputted from the control unit 12 to a feeder 14. When the calculated content is larger than the preset value, the control signal to supply a raw material to the melt 6 is outputted to another feeder 13.

A method for evaluating a coating sag includes the steps of determining a coating thickness on a specific coating surface, evaluating an inclination of the specific coating surface, determining a criticality of a coating sag on a vertical surface at which a coating sag is produced and evaluating whether or not a coating sag is produced on the specific coating surface based on the inclination of the specific coating surface and the coating thickness on the specific coating surface in view of the criticality on the vertical coating surface as a reference. It is possible to determine coating conditions which can effectively prevent a coating sag during the coating action even if it is made on an inclined coating surface.

The measuring device has bobs 10, 17 suspended from a weight 12 with wires 11, 16. The hook 13 of the weight 12 is hung from a suspensor thread 15 extending downwards from a balance 14. The weight 12 may be omitted by using the upper bob 10 for dead weight. The bobs 10, 17 and the wires 11, 16 may be coated with a coating layer unreactive to the melt 19 whose density is to be measured. The weights of the measuring device is measured by the balance 14 under the first condition that the lower bob 17 is immersed in the liquid 19 and the second condition that the bobs 10, 17 are both immersed in the liquid 19. The density of the liquid 19 is calculated from the two measured values without the influence of the surface tension of the liquid 19 applied to the wires 11, 16.

A coated surface on a vehicle body is visually inspected for defective parts and the defective parts found are marked with defect marks. A TV camera searches the coated surface for the defect marks and transfers data on the positions of the defect marks. A sanding robot wet-sands the marked portions of the coated surface of the vehicle body on the basis of the data given the TV camera.

In a card reader for reading information from a card which may contain the information as optical, magnetic, electronic or physical data, inside a casing is provided a carriage which carries the card and is adapted to be conveyed from an outer position to an inner position by a linear drive mechanism. By not using a pair of drive and pinch rollers as opposed to conventional card readers, the card is free from contamination by the rollers, and the operation reliability of the card reader is improved. Further, the elimination of rollers also contributes to the reduction in the overall height of the card reader. The clamp mechanism for securing a card to the carriage may be provided with interlocking means which prevents the movement of the carriage until a card is securely gripped by the clamp mechanism.

A container substantially made of plastic materials and having a gas barrier property. The container has a wall including a laminated sheet which comprises an inner layer and an outer layer both made of a thermoplastic material and an intermediate barrier layer between the inner and outer layers and made of a resin material of which gas barrier property can be improved by stretching. The intermediate layer is held between the inner and outer layers in a stretched state. A rigid layer of a large thickness may be provided outside the outer layer. In manufacturing the container, the intermediate layer may be in a stretched state when the laminate is provided. The rate of stretching can be increased when the laminated sheet is formed into the shape of the container.

A plastic can is formed of a body member including a content protecting layer which is a tubular body formed by folding back and outward one side edge of a laminated film, bonding the folded parts such that air bubbles are not entrapped thereunder, overlapping the other side edge of the same laminated film on the bonded surface and bonding the side edges such that air bubbles are not entrapped between the side edges. An additional sheet is bonded all over the external surface of the laminated film except for a projecting stripe formed by the bonding of the side edges. A surfacing plastic layer covers the additional sheet and the projecting stripes. An apparatus is provided for forming the can, smoothing the surfacing plastic layer, forming the tube into can bodies, shaping the can bodies and sealing, lids on the ends of the cans.
