A catalyst complex composed of boron trifluoride and a cocatalyst mixture of 10 to 90% by weight of a monohydric primary C1- to C20-alcohol and 90 to 10% by weight of a monohydric secondary C3- to C20-alcohol, where the molar ratio of boron trifluoride to the sum of all alcohols is 2:1 to 1:10. This catalyst complex is used in the preparation of high-reactivity isobutene homopolymers having a number-average molecular weight of 300 to 50 000, using, as the feedstock, a C4 hydrocarbon mixture comprising at least 20% by weight of isobutene and a total of at least 10% by weight of other C4 olefins.

A method for preparing a catalyst system for heterogenous catalysis of an isobutylene polymerization reaction includes the steps of forming an alumina support in which the alumina support has pores formed therein, and reacting BF3/methanol catalyst complex with the alumina support. The ratio of methanol to BF3 in the catalyst complex ranges from 0.5 moles to 2 moles of methanol per mole of BF3. The alumina support is formed so as to have pores each having a diameter of greater than twenty nanometers. The alumina support can be in the form of beads or extrudates having a length significantly greater than a diameter. The extrudate can also have a tri-lobe configuration.

A polyisobutylene composition has polyisobutylene molecules with a first portion having a alpha vinylidene molecules, a second portion having beta vinylidene molecules, and a third portion having internal vinylidene molecules. The first portion has less than 75% of the polyisobutylene molecules of the composition. A total of the first portion and the second portion is less than 90% of the polyisobutylene molecules of the composition. The third portion is more than 3% of the polyisobutylene molecules of the composition. A process for forming this polyisobutylene polymer composition passes an isobutylene through a fixed bed reactor having a boron trifluoride/alcohol complex therein so as to produce the polyisobutylene composition.

Additive concentrates contain at least one polyisobutenamine in an amount of from 0.1 to 80% by weight.

A process for making a relatively low molecular weight, mid-range vinylidene content PIB polymer product comprising a liquid phase polymerization process conducted in a loop reactor at a temperature of at least 60° F. using a BF3/methanol catalyst complex and a contact time of no more than 4 minutes. At least about 90% of the PIB molecules present in the product comprise alpha or beta position isomers. The vinylidene (alpha) isomer content of the product may range from 20% to 70% thereof, and the content of tetra-substituted internal double bonds is very low, advantageously no more than about 10%, preferably less than about 5% and ideally less than about 1-2%.

The etherates are useful for polymerizing a one-olefin or mixtures thereof, preferably comprising isobutylene, whereby the resulting polymer contains a high percentage (80-100%) vinylidene character.
