An IMM solar cell and an associated method of fabricating an IMM solar cell are provided. In the context of a method, a first subcell may be formed upon a temporary substrate and a second subcell may be formed upon the first subcell. The second subcell may have a smaller band gap than the first subcell. The method may also bond the first and second subcells to a silicon subcell and then remove the temporary substrate. In the context of an IMM solar cell, the IMM solar cell includes first and second subcells with the first subcell disposed upon the second subcell and the second subcell having a smaller band gap than the first subcell. The IMM solar cell may also include a silicon subcell supporting the first and second subcells thereupon with a metal-to-metal bond between the silicon subcell and the second subcell.

A multi-junction power converter system illuminated by an incident light source includes a multi-layer stack having a plurality of junctions defined by materials having different bandgaps, with an upper junction having a higher bandgap, and junctions therebelow having smaller bandgaps. The upper junction absorbs more of the incident light, whereas lower junctions successively absorb less of the remaining incident light. The junctions below the upper junction are supplied with additional illumination that has been reemitted from previous cells due to photon recycling. Related devices and methods of operation are also discussed.

A solar cell is disclosed with V-grooves which are series connected, but electrically isolated, indirect bandgap solar cells which are responsive to different light frequencies on both sides of a semi-insulating optically transparent substrate. The device has a very high conversion efficiency of approximately 40% and high open-circuit voltage and low series resistance. An exemplary structure in accordance with this disclosure has a series of silicon V-groove cells on one side and another series of GaAlAs V-groove cells on the other side. The cells are of generally trapezoidal cross-section. The difference between the characteristics of the Si cell and the GaAlAs cell is matched by control of the number of V-grooves.
