    Abstract: The present invention relates to platelet-shaped pigments that comprise a layer obtained by calcining TiO2/SiOy or TiO2/metal, especially TiO2/AI (0.03≦y≦1.95, especially 0.03≦y≦1.8, more especially 0.70≦y≦1.8), and to the use thereof in paints, textiles, ink-jet printing, cosmetics, coatings, plastics, printing inks, in glazes for ceramics and glass, and in security printing. The pigments according to the invention are distinguished by a high gloss and a very uniform thickness, as a result of which very high colour purity and colour strength are obtained.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a collection of composite plateletlike particles comprising a core and at least one coating layer consisting essentially of a compound having from 60 to 95% by weight of carbon and from 5 to 25% by weight of nitrogen, the balance to 100% being selected from elements of the group consisting of hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur. The invention also relates to processes for the manufacture thereof, to polymer compositions containing it, and to the use thereof as effect pigments. Preferably, the process for preparing the instant collection of particles comprises the steps of (a) suspending plateletlike particles in a liquid; (b) optionally adding a surface modifier, a polymerisation catalyst or both; (c) before or after step (b), adding one or more polymers containing nitrogen and carbon atoms, or one or more monomers which are capable to polymerize to said polymer; (d) effecting a polymeric coating layer to be formed on the surface of said plateletlike particles from the polymers or monomers added at step (c); (e) isolating said plateletlike particles having said polymeric coating layer from the suspension; and (f) heating said plateletlike particles having said polymeric coating layer to a temperature of from 100° C. to 1000° C. in a gaseous environment.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for the preparation of a plane-parallel structure (a platelet-shaped body, or flake), comprising at least one dielectric layer consisting of one or more oxides of a metal selected from groups 3 to 15 of the periodic table, which comprises the steps of: (a) applying a thin film of the dielectric material on a flexible belt, by passing the belt through an aqueous solution of a fluorine scavenger and one or more fluorine containing metal complexes which are the precursors of the desired metal oxide coating; and subjecting said solution to microwave radiation to deposit the metal oxide onto said flexible belt, wherein step (a) can optionally be repeated using different fluorine containing metal complexes to produce one or more metal oxide layers or a gradient of concentration of 2 different metal oxides across the thickness; (b) separating the resulting layer from the flexible belt as plane-parallel structures.
