A process for the alkylation of aromatics with olefins using a solid catalyst bed containing UZM-8 zeolite is disclosed. A polyalkylated aromatic is passed to the catalyst bed to reduce the concentration of the olefin at alkylation conditions. A portion of the effluent recovered from the catalyst bed may be recycled to the catalyst bed. Such operation can decrease the catalyst deactivation rate and the formation of diphenylalkanes. The process disclosed herein is applicable to processes for the production of a wide variety of commercially important alkylated aromatics, including ethylbenzene and cumene.

Applicants have synthesized a new crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite identified as UZM-4M. This new zeolite is obtained by treating a UZM-4 zeolite with a fluorosilicate salt to obtain a zeolite having the empirical formula: M1an+Al1-xExSiyOz where M1 is an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, rare earth metal, hydronium ion or ammonium ion, E can be gallium, iron, boron, indium and mixtures thereof and has a Si/Al ratio of 1.5 to about 10.

A new family of crystalline alumino-silicate zeolites has been synthesized. These zeolites are represented by the empirical formula. Mmn+Rrp+Al(1−x)ExSiyOz where M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal such as lithium and strontium, R is a nitrogen containing organic cation such as tetramethyl ammonium and E is a framework element such as gallium. They are also characterized by unique x-ray diffraction patterns and have catalytic properties for carrying out various hydrocarbon conversion processes.

A method for preparing a family of zeolites, examples of which have been designated UZM-5, UZM-5P and UZM-6, and are represented by the empirical formula Mmn+Cgh+Rrp+Al(1-x)ExSiyOz The method includes forming a Charge Density Mismatch (CDM) reaction mixture comprising reactive sources of Al, Si, optionally a framework element, E, and at least one organic nitrogen containing cation template, C, in the hydroxide form. After the CDM mixture is mixed while aging, an organic cation crystallization template, R, and at least one alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, M, is added. The combined final reaction mixture is reacted with mixing to produce the zeolite, which may be used in various hydrocarbon conversion processes.

The selective saturation of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons (e.g., diolefins) in a hydrogenation feed stream comprising an aromatic compound (e.g., benzene) and one or more nitrogen compounds renders it beneficial when the stream or a portion thereof is subsequently treated (e.g., with a zeolitic adsorbent) to remove nitrogen. In particular, the selective saturation of, for example, olefins and diolefins prolongs the life of the nitrogen guard bed. In a representative embodiment, the selective hydrogenation is applied to a recycle benzene-containing stream recovered in the separation section (e.g., from the benzene/toluene splitter overhead) of a styrene production process, prior to treatment with a nitrogen guard bed adsorbent.

A process is presented for the production of linear alkylbenzenes. The process includes contacting an aromatic compound with an olefin in the presence of a selective zeolite catalyst. The catalyst includes two zeolites combined to improve the linearity, and to produce detergent grade LAB. The two zeolites are selected to limit skeletal isomerization while producing a desired 2-phenyl content for the LAB.
