Abstract: A magnetodynamic apparatus for separating conductive non-ferrous blanks includes at least one magnet positioned adjacent to a stack of the blanks and configured to generate a magnetic field in a first direction with respect to a major surface of an uppermost blank within the stack. The apparatus includes an actuator device for positioning the magnet with respect to the stack during production of an electric current in a second direction along the major surface. The second direction is normal to the first direction such that a magnetic separation force is generated in a third direction normal to the first and second directions. The separation force is sufficient for magnetically separating the uppermost blank from remaining blanks in the stack. The magnets may be rotated on a rotor or held stationary. The electric current may be induced or directly injected into the uppermost blank.

Abstract: Multi-switch module packaging for a multilevel inverter is provided. A multilevel inverter is connected to the battery. The multilevel inverter includes three levels, each of the three levels having a first module and a second module. The first module is formed on a first insulating substrate material, and the second module is formed on a second insulating substrate material separate from the first insulating substrate material. The first module includes a first switch coupled to the battery via a positive power rail, a second switch coupled to the battery via a negative power rail, and a third switch coupled to the second module. The second module includes another first switch coupled to the battery, another second switch coupled to the battery, and another third switch coupled to the first module. The first module includes four terminals and the second module includes another four terminals.

A control system is coupled to the inverter. The control system is configured to control the inverter to output a first electrical current having a first triangular waveform to the motor, a second electrical current having a second triangular waveform to the motor, and a third electrical current to the motor. The first and second triangular waveforms are out of phase.

Abstract: An electric propulsion system includes a rotary electric machine having an output member, a rechargeable energy storage system (“RESS”) connected to the electric machine, a user interface device, and a controller. The RESS includes multiple battery modules and a switching circuit, the latter being configured, in response to electronic switching control signals, to connect the battery modules in a parallel-connected configuration or a series-connected configuration, as a selected battery configuration. The user interface device receives an operator-requested drive mode request as an electrical signal indicative of a desired drive mode of the electric propulsion system. The controller, which is programmed with mode-specific electrical loss information associated with the desired drive mode, establishes the selected battery configuration in response to the drive mode request, and presents a drive mode recommendation via the user interface device when the loss information associated with the desired drive mode exceeds a calibrated loss threshold.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a permanent magnet for a rotor of an axial flux electric machine is described herein. The method includes forming multiple permanent magnet (PM) pieces to have the same shape. Abstract: A method for constructing a lamination for a rotary electric machine includes forming an annular lamination from a ferrous core material having a first relative magnetic permeability. The lamination defines through-openings, e.g., for permanent magnets or conductors. Peripheral bridges of the core material extend between the through-openings and an outer or inner diameter surface of the lamination. The method includes diffusing an alloy material having a second relative magnetic permeability into the bridges to form austenitic bridges, with the second relative magnetic permeability being less than the first relative magnetic permeability. A rotary electric machine includes a stator and rotor. A vehicle includes a rotary electric machine connected to the battery pack and to road wheels, and having a rotor and/or a stator constructed in accordance with the method.

Abstract: Presented are segmented hairpin bar conductors for electric machines, methods for making/using such segmented bar conductors, electromagnetic motors using such segmented bar conductors, and vehicles equipped with an induction motor generator unit using segmented hairpin bar conductors. An electric machine includes a stator that defines multiple circumferentially spaced, radially elongated stator slots. A rotor is located adjacent and movable with respect to the stator. One or more permanent magnets are mounted to the rotor, and one or more U-shaped hairpin windings are mounted to the stator in juxtaposed spaced relation to the magnet(s). Each hairpin winding is formed from an array of collimated, electrically conductive wires that are bundled together into a unitary bar conductor. The segmented hairpin winding has a pair of hairpin legs, each of which adjoins and projects from a respective end of a hairpin crown. Each hairpin leg inserts into a respective one the stator slots.
