An intake unit having an integrated charge air cooler is suited for use in an internal combustion engine provided with an exhaust gas turbocharger and having cylinders which are part of a machine housing including a cylinder housing and a cylinder head including inlet ducts, to which inlet ducts the intake unit is routed by connecting ducts. The intake unit includes a unit container having a first container section with connecting ducts, this section being connected to a second container section accommodating the charge air cooler. The second container section is connected to a third container section that carries the air to the charge air cooler. To optimize the intake unit, the internal combustion engine is provided in the form of an outboard motor and the machine housing includes a vertical crankshaft system with two crankshafts and horizontal cylinders. The exhaust gas turbocharger created by a turbine and a charger is disposed on a top front side of the machine housing. The first container section, the second container section, and the third container section are combined as one integral unit to form an intake unit module composed of a light alloy. The third container section is created as a tubular body that tapers down from the second container toward the charger.

The air system can include a compressor, separation device, first conduit, second conduit and a system for controlling a ratio of gasses that enter the combustion chamber during an intake stroke. The separation device can include a housing and membrane. The housing can be fluidly coupled to the compressor and configured to receive a first volume of intake air therefrom. The membrane can be disposed within the housing and configured to separate the first volume of intake air into a volume of nitrogen-rich air and a volume of oxygen-rich air. The first conduit can fluidly couple the compressor to the combustion chamber. The second conduit can fluidly couple the compressor to the separation device. The gasses can include the volume of nitrogen-rich air, the volume of oxygen-rich air, and a second volume of intake air.

A vaporized fuel processing apparatus for an engine, which includes an intake passage equipped with a supercharging device and a throttle valve, has an adsorbent canister and a purge passage. The adsorbent canister is adapted to communicate with a fuel tank. The purge passage communicates the adsorbent canister with the intake passage of the engine. The purge passage has in series a purge valve for controlling communication through the purge passage and a purge pump for generating gas flow from the adsorbent canister toward the intake passage. The purge passage includes a sub-passage for communicating the adsorbent canister with the intake passage without passing through the purge pump. The purge passage divides into a first passage connected to the intake passage downstream of the throttle valve and a second passage connected to the intake passage upstream of the supercharging device.
