In an apparatus for recording, in successive parallel tracks on a record medium, an audio signal and a color video signal comprised of a luminance signal and a chrominance signal constituted by at least two chrominance signal components, and in which the luminance and chrominance signals are recorded in alternate tracks, respectively, with the chrominance signal components being time-base-compressed and time-division-multiplexed so as to be arranged alternately in sequence in the respective tracks; the audio signal frequency modulates at least one carrier to provide a first frequency modulated output in a predetermined frequency band, the time-base-compressed and time-division-multiplexed chrominance signal components frequency modulate a second carrier to provide a second frequency modulated output in a frequency band above the predetermined frequency band of the first frequency modulated output, the first and second frequency modulated outputs are combined, as in an adder or mixer, the luminance signal is processed, for example, in a frequency modulator, and then supplied to first recording heads for recording in the respective ones of the alternate tracks, and second recording heads receive the combined first and second frequency modulated outputs for recording in the others of the alternate tracks.

In the video tape recorder capable of providing a recording and reproduction with high picture quality, first and second heads of a first azimuth angle and for recording and reproducing the luminance signal is disposed on the rotary head cylinder. Third and fourth heads of a second azimuth angle different from the first azimuth angle, and for recording and reproducing the color signal is disposed adjacent to the first and second heads on the rotatry head cylinder, respectively. The second and fourth heads are disposed at a position separate, by a distance corresponding to the period of integer times one horizontal scanning period of the recorded video signal, from the position on the rotary head cylinder rotated 180.degree. from that of the first and third heads, respectively. A fifth head with the second azimuth angle is disposed at a positon rotated 180.degree. from that of the first head. High image quality recording and reproduction can be performed by using the first to fourth heads. The first and fifth heads reproduces the video information as recorded on the video tape in the format which is employed for the current home use VTR, and in which the frequency-modulated luminance signal and the low-frequency converted color sub-carrier signal are superposed and recorded in one track.

A method of recording and/or reproducing color video signal comprises the steps of forming from a color video signal a frequency division multiplexed signal of an FM luminance signal and a frequency converted carrier chrominance signal, recording the frequency division multiplexed signal on a first track on a magnetic tape by one of two heads constituting a pair, forming a high-frequency signal at least including an added signal made up of a high-frequency component of the color video signal and a high-frequency bias signal, recording the high-frequency signal on a second track by the other of the two heads simultaneously as the recording of the first track, demodulating at least a reproduced luminance signal from a signal reproduced from the first track, obtaining at least a high-frequency component of a luminance signal from a signal reproduced from the second track, and mixing the reproduced luminance signal, the high-frequency component of the luminance signal, and a reproduced carrier chrominance signal reproduced from the reproduced frequency division multiplexed signal, or a reproduced carrier chrominance signal separated from the reproduced high-frequency signal. A recording and reproducing apparatus performs recording and reproduction according to the above method.

An intermodulation distortion reducing circuit for a frequency-modulated signal comprises a sinusoidal wave shaping circuit supplied with an input frequency-modulated signal including an intermodulation distortion component, for shaping the waveform of the input frequency-modulated signal into a waveform closely approximating a sinusoidal wave, and a mean DC level detecting circuit supplied with an output signal of the sinusoidal wave shaping circuit, for detecting a mean DC level of the output signal of the sinusoidal wave shaping circuit and producing a detection output. The sinusoidal wave shaping circuit is supplied with the detection output of the mean DC level detecting circuit and a waveform shaping quantity thereof is varied to obtain the waveform closely approximating the sinusoidal waveform. The sinusoidal wave shaping circuit produces a frequency-modulated signal having a waveform closely approximating a sinusoidal waveform, with its intermodulation distortion component reduced.
