Abstract:
This invention provides a coating composition for use on a food-contact surface of a container (e.g., a food or beverage can) that includes a polymer having one or more segments of Formula I: —O—Ar—Rn—C(O)—O—R1—O—C(O)—Rn—Ar—O— wherein each Ar is independently a divalent aryl group (i.e., an arylene group) or heteroarylene group; R1 is a divalent organic group; each R is independently a divalent organic group; and n is 0 or 1. Containers comprising the polymer and methods of making such containers are also provided.
Abstract:
A coating composition including a functionalized resin selected from at least one of polyurethanes, epoxies, polyamides, chlorinated polyolefins, acrylics, polyesters, or mixtures or copolymers thereof, wherein the resins comprises at least one of (meth)acryl or acetoacetyl functionality; a (meth)acryl functional compound; and a functionalized silicone compound.
Abstract:
A polymer is provided that preferably includes at least one unsaturated cycloaliphatic group. In one embodiment, the polymer is combined with an optional crosslinker and an optional carrier to form a coating composition suitable for use in coating articles such as packaging articles. In one embodiment, the polymer has at least one unsaturated cycloaliphatic group that is at least bicyclic.
Abstract:
A polymer and coating composition containing the polymer are provided that are useful in coating applications such as, for example, food or beverage packaging containers. The polymer preferably includes a backbone having one or more polycyclic groups. In one embodiment, the polymer is a polyester and, more preferably, a polyester-urethane polymer. In one embodiment, the one or more polycyclic groups is a tricyclic or higher group.
Abstract:
A custom color paint or stain tinting system employs at least one light-colored non-infrared-absorptive base paint or stain packaged in a point-of-sale container and an array of colorants including an infrared-absorptive black liquid colorant, a non-infrared-absorptive black liquid colorant, and one or more additional liquid colorants made with non-infrared-absorptive pigments. The infrared-absorptive black liquid colorant or non-infrared-absorptive black liquid colorant may respectively be used to make custom-tinted interior or exterior paints and stains.
Abstract:
A polymer particle (10) useful for opacifying includes a polymer core (12) and a polymer sheath (16) surrounding the polymer core (12). The polymer core (12) is produced by polymerizing the polymer sheath (16) around the polymer core (12) in an emulsion. After at least a portion of the polymer core (12) is formed, a non-homopolymerizing monomer is added to the emulsion.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to color matching and, more specifically, an apparatus and method for preparing a stain to match a target color of a selected substrate (e.g., wood species). In one embodiment a system is provided that comprises (i) a computer (e.g., a stand-alone PC or a networked computer), (ii) hardware and/or software to store a database of stain records, (iii) hardware and/or software to create or load spectral data (e.g., a digital image) of a target sample, and (iv) hardware and/or software to display images and/or process spectral data. The system preferably facilitates the selection of a desired stain, and in preferred embodiments may also include hardware and/or software to dispense colorant agents and/or vehicles to create the desired stain. The system of the present invention may be used in a “manual” mode (whereby a human compares database and target images and makes a selection); an “automatic” mode (whereby the computer system uses spectral data to suggest a closest match based on the selected substrate); or a “combination” mode (whereby the computer system uses spectral data to suggest a closest match and the user can then compare the suggested match with various images to achieve a final selection).
Abstract:
A polymer with a backbone and an unsaturated side chain attached to the backbone. The polymer may optionally be combined with an oxidation catalyst and/or other ingredients.
Abstract:
An aqueous crosslinkable coating composition that includes a PU polymer and a vinyl polymer bearing carbonyl groups (i.e., a carbonyl-functional vinyl polymer) and/or latex polymer. The composition also preferably includes carbonyl-reactive amine and/or hydrazine functional groups.
Abstract:
Coating compositions for cementitious substrates may be made from a multistage latex polymer; silane; and a water-soluble acid, acid anhydride or acid salt capable of etching or otherwise reacting with the surface of the substrate to provide improved coating adhesion. The silane my may be present as a silane coupling agent distinct from the multistage latex polymer, or may be present as silane functionality on the multistage latex polymer. The coating compositions adhere well to cementitious substrates and have a self-etching capability which improves coating adhesion, especially near edges and corners.
