A radiation thermometer for measurement of the temperature of molten iron includes a probe tube with a sealed bottom in the form of a spheroidal shape and is made of zirconium boride ceramics. The probe tube is immersed in molten iron and radiation emitted from the spheroidal closed end of the probe tube is received by a sensor at the far end of the tube which is above the level of the molten iron. The spheroidal end of the probe tube is below the surface of molten iron by more than 10 times the inner radius of the probe tube.

A process for continuously isomerizing xylene, which comprises subjecting a hydrocarbon feed material comprising a major proportion of a xylene isomer mixture and a minor proportion of non-aromatic hydrocarbons to xylene isomerization reaction, isolating a specific xylene isomer from the resulting isomerization reaction mixture, and recycling the remaining hydrocarbon mixture to the xylene isomerization reaction; wherein the hydrocarbon feed material or the xylene isomerization reaction mixture is treated with hydrogen in the presence of a cracking catalyst comprising(a) a zeolite selected from zeolites ZSM-5, ZSM-11, ZSM-12, ZSM-34 and ZSM-48 series, at least 20% of its cation site being occupied by a cation of a metal selected from alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, and(b) a refractory amorphous inorganic oxide having platinum supported thereon,at a temperature and a weight hourly space velocity which simultaneously satisfy the following inequalities (i) to (iv) ##EQU1## wherein T represents the temperature (.degree.C.), and V represents the weight hourly space velocity (hr.sup.-1),thereby to crack the non-aromatic hydrocarbons in the hydrocarbon feed material or the xylene isomerization reaction mixture.

A heart pulse rate measuring system comprises a casing, a pair of rod-shaped grip sensors extending outwardly from the opposite sides of the casing for sensing a heart pulse signal, and an electric circuit for calculating a heart pulse rate from the sensed heart pulse signal. Each of the grip sensors is composed of two conductive cylindrical electrodes arranged in an axially aligned relationship and electrically insulated from each other for obtaining a pulse rate utilizing the potentials at four points in a user's body. The electric circuit includes a differential amplifier, having a ground connection to one of the two electrodes of each sensor and two inputs for the remaining electrodes. A filter is used to eliminate noise from the output of the differential amplifier, and a computer calculates the heart rate from the output of the filter. Additionally, an AC-DC converter is connected between the differential amplifier and the computer for providing a DC signal to the computer when an output is provided by the differential amplifier. The computer responds to a predetermined DC level by starting a display indication of heart pulse rate. A timer is provided for use of the system with an exercise device and an alarm is activated at the expiration of the preset exercise time or if pulse rate deviates beyond upper or lower limits preset therefor. A printer provides a printout of time and/or pulse rate at predetermined time intervals.

Therefore, the apparatus according to the present invention can be used as a pulsimeter or a cardiometer according to the state of a person in motion. The apparatus is provided with a heart sensor having a plurality of cone-shaped conductive rubber electrodes to differentially detect an electrocardiowave voltage signal generated from three different places near the heart and a pulse sensor having a matching infrared-ray emitting diode and infrared-ray receiving phototransistor to detect the light reflected from the blood flowing through capillary vessels under the finger pad. The apparatus additionally functions as a stopwatch or a timer as selected by a mode-selector switch.

A method for synthesizing amorphous silicon nitride, wherein silicon halide and ammonia are reacted in a reaction vessel at a high temperature in the absence of oxygen to thereby synthesize powder of amorphous silicon nitride, then the powder is separated from a gas containing therein gaseous ammonia halide which has been produced simultaneously with said amorphous silicon nitride by use of a collecting means, comprises directly mixing, in advance of the separation, cool gas containing therein neither oxygen nor moisture into said gas to cool down said powder and gas so that both substances may be put in said collecting means without deposition of ammonium halide to the inner wall of the reaction vessel, and other component parts.
