Moldings based on pyrogenic silicon dioxide with a pore volume of 0.5 to 1.8 ml/g are prepared by homogenizing pyrogenic silicon dioxide with methylhydroxyethyl cellulose, wax and polyethylene glycol with the addition of water, subjecting this mixture to a compounding and shaping process, extruding, optionally cutting the extrudate to the desired length using a cutting device, drying at a temperature of 70° to 150° C. and conditioning for a period of 30 minutes to 10 hours at a temperature of 400° to 1200° C. The moldings may be used as catalysts or catalyst supports for the preparation of vinyl acetate monomer, the hydration of ethylene and the hydration of propylene.

A process for the continuous catalytic conversion of organic compounds, that, together with unwanted attendant materials, form a starting substance: first the organic compounds of the starting material are purposely extracted by means of condensed fluids. Then the extract, containing the condensed fluids and organic compounds as the reaction mixture is contacted with a catalyst for the catalytic conversion of the organic compounds to form a product mixture, which contains the individual products of the catalytic conversion. The product mixture is separated from the reaction mixture and the fluids employed are, optionally, conducted back for extraction.

A process is disclosed for continuously hydrogenating unsaturated fats, fatty acids or fatty acid esters on a shaped catalyst in a solid bed. The reactants flow over the catalyst in the presence of a medium or solvent mixture in supercritical conditions. This leads to considerably improved activity and selectivity of the hydrogenation reaction compared with conventional trickle bed hydrogenation processes.

Disclosed are shaped organopolysiloxanes containing sulfonate groups and consisting of units(O.sub.3/2 Si--R.sup.1 --SO.sub.3.sup.-).sub.x M.sup.x+ (I)in which R.sup.1 is an alkylene group, x is a number from 1 to 4 depending on M, and M is hydrogen or a monovalent to tetravalent optionally complex metal ion, and the valencies of the silicon linked oxygen atoms are saturated by silicon atoms of other groups (I) or by crosslinking silicon and aluminum compounds, the ratio of the silicon atoms in (I) to the silicon and aluminum atoms of the crosslinker being from 1:4 to 1:20. The organopolysiloxanes containing sulfonate groups are present in the form of spherical particles with a diameter of 0.01 to 3 mm, a specific surface of 0.1 to 1200 m.sup.2 /g, a specific pore volume of 0.01 to 6 ml/g, and an apparent density of 50 to 1000 g/l. Also disclosed are processes for the production of the shaped sulfonated organopolysiloxanes and to their use as a solid acid catalyst.

The organosiloxane amine functioning as carrier for the metals contains the units ##STR1## and/or units ##STR2## in which R.sup.1 to R.sup.5 are a group ##STR3## with R.sup.6 as a double-bonded group bound to N and Si (e.g. an alkylene group) and X is an amine group such as The carrier substance can be cross-linked with cross-linking agents containing Si, Ti, Zr or Al. The metal-containing product is spherical in form and is defined by the parameters of sphere diameter, specific surface and pore volume as well as bulk density. A method of production is disclosed which can be carried out in several variants as well as the use of the metal-containing product as catalyst for hydrogenation reactions and oxidation reactions.

This invention relates to formed, polymeric complexes of metals of the eighth subgroup of the periodic system with ligands of an organosiloxane copolycondensate optionally cross-linked by means of cross-linking agents containing Si, Ti, Zr and/or Al, in the form of statistical, block or mixed copolycondensates. The ratio between the number of moles of phosphine units and the number of moles of bound metal atoms is 1:1 to 1000 to 1 and the ratio between the amine units and the phosphine is preferably 5:95 to 95:5 mole %. The polymeric complex compounds are present macroscopically as spherical particles with a diameter in the range of 0.01 to 3.0 mm, a BET surface of greater than 0 to 1000 m.sup.2 /g, a specific pore volume of 0.01 to 6.5 ml/g and a bulk density of 50 to 1000 g/l. The invention also includes several methods of preparing the complexes with post-treatment stages and the use of the polymeric metal complexes as catalysts in organic chemistry.
