This application concerns compositions comprising a mixture of air-drying dicyclopentenyl acrylate or methacrylate binder and a granular or particulate aggregate material, which may comprise a hydraulic cement, and is adapted to be formed by casting, extruding, or molding in any fashion into any desired shape and air-drying and resulting shaped article, thereby producing an integral, solid article of unitary mass and structure. The dicyclopentenyl (meth)acrylate may be used as an impregnant, polymerizable in situ, for already formed articles of porous nature, e.g., concrete, wood, pressed boards, and powdered pressed metal, such as aluminum, iron, steel, etc., to reduce the permeability at their surfaces and provides hard, continuous, hydrophobic, wear-resistant, and weather-resistant surfaces thereon.

This invention is concerned with autoxidizable coating compositions which contain(a) a member selected from the group consisting of an organic polyisocyanate, a urethane oil, and a uralkyd;(b) at least one non-volatile reactive liquid monomer selected from the group consisting of dicyclopentenyl acrylate and dicyclopentenyl methacrylate; and(c) an effective amount of a polyvalent metal-containing complex or salt that catalyzes the curing of (a) and (b).Use of the non-volatile reactive liquid component enables the production of coating compositions having high application solids content and yet having suitable viscosity for efficient handling. The coatings obtained from the compositions of the present invention combine the typical desirable properties including durability, weather-resistance, etc. of polyurethane coatings and often with unexpected enhancement of the quality of the coatings, such as in respect to toughness, while providing such compositions having higher solids content to facilitate the coating operations therewith.

Novel, versatile aminolysis products are obtained by aminolyzing, with a polyamine of aliphatic nature, an oligomeric homopolymer of an alkyl methacrylate in which the alkyl group contains from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an oligomeric copolymer of at least two alkyl methacrylates, such oligomers being produced from monomeric alkyl methacrylates by anionic polymerization to provide number average molecular weights in the range of 600 to 10,000 and preferably in the range of 1,000 to 5,000. Alternatively, an anionically polymerized homo-oligomer of a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)-alkyl acrylate or co-oligomer of at least two alkyl acrylates in which the alkyl in at least one monomer has from 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the co-oligomer, and the alkyl in the comonomers may have from 1 to 18 or more carbon atoms, are aminolyzed with a polyamine of aliphatic nature. Instead of oligomers obtained by anionic polymerization of esters of acrylic acid or of esters of methacrylic acid, there may be used in the aminolysis, oligomers of corresponding low molecular weight obtained by free radical polymerization, and in this version there may also be included copolymers (not obtainable by anionic polymerization) of an ester of methacrylic acid with an ester of acrylic acid and also copolymers of one or more such esters with monomers not of ester type, such as styrene. The aminolysis products have outstanding utility in the coatings field, particularly as the hardener for curing epoxy resins.

This invention is concerned with coating compositions comprising an unsaturated polyol/polycarboxylic acid alkyd or polyester condensate resin (including drying oil-modified alkyd), the polycarboxylic acid or anhydride precursor(s) of which alkyd may be aromatic, aliphatic, or both. In one preferred embodiment Type A, the polyacid is predominantly or exclusively aliphatic and in another Type B, it is predominantly or exclusively aromatic in character. The alkyd or polyester is carried (dissolved) predominantly or exclusively in a substantially non-volatile reactive liquid consisting essentially of a) dicyclopentenyl acrylate or methacrylate or mixtures thereof or of b) a mixture of such (meth)acrylate with one or more alkyl or alkenyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid in which the alkyl and/or alkenyl group contains 10 to 20 carbon atoms. The compositions also contain a polyvalent metal-containing drier or siccative; optionally a volatile agent for inhibiting the action of the drier, i.e., a fugitive stabilizer; they may also contain pigments, rheology control agents, pigment-dispersing agents, and other components.

The reactive coalescent contains at least one acetoacetate grouping, or an enamine thereof. In one embodiment the reactive coalescent also functions as an emulsion polymer crosslinker.
