Abstract: Sections 1 and 2 each in the form of a welded pipe (square pipe) are provided. The sections 1 and 2 are brought into abutment with each other so that the respective end faces 3a and 3b abut each other at a predetermined angle .beta. between each section and its axial direction. The sections 1 and 2 are arranged symmetrically with respect to each other. Acute end portions of the abutted portion are chamfered to from a plane part. Corners of the sections 1 and 2 are rounded. In such a combined state of both sections, the abutted portion is welded in the circumferential direction to form a weld bead. As a result, penetration of weld metal to the section 1 and that to the section 2 become equal to each other. Thus, it becomes possible to fabricate a welded structure having a uniform weld bead and having improved strength and reliability of welded portions.

Abstract: An elongate flexible clamp mechanism defines first and second ends and is capable of assume a substantially flat configuration and is capable of being positioned in encircling relation about a cylindrical object such as a pipe. A pair of elongate flexible members such as wire cables, chains or pivotally interconnected rigid members support a plurality of substantially rigid clamping members in spaced relation along the lengths of said elongate flexible members. The clamping members are each provided with jack screws for force applying engagement with the pipe to enable alignment of adjacent pipe sections and to correct minor irregularities in pipe roundness so that adjacent pipe sections can be efficiently welded. The elongate flexible clamp mechanism is provided with first and second latch connector elements which are interconnected when the clamp mechanism is located in encircling relation about the pipe. The latch mechanism is of the cam or toggle type, enabling the clamp mechanism to be tightened about the pipe. Jack screws are also provided on each of the clamping elements to permit jacking force to be applied to the pipe for optimum pipe alignment and for correction of minor irregularities in pipe roundness.

Abstract: A gas shield strip cladding welding system including a workpiece, a strip of welding material, an enclosure having an opening through which the strip of welding material passes, a feeder for controllably passing the strip of welding material into the enclosure through the opening, a gas delivery conduit connected to the enclosure so as to pass a shielding gas into the enclosure adjacent to the strip of material, and a power supply electrically connected to the strip of welding material and to the workpiece such that an arc is produced when the strip of welding material comes into close proximity to the workpiece. A mechanism is connected to the enclosure so as to move the enclosure continuously relative to the workpiece so as to deposit the welding material in a desired pattern. The shield gas includes an inert gas. The gas delivery conduit includes a first gas line connected to the enclosure so as to deliver the shield gas to one side of the strip of material and a second gas line connected to the enclosure so as to deliver the shield gas to an opposite side of the strip of material.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for applying a weld overlay to a tube. Using a first weld head, a bead of overlay material is applied onto a tube by melting the overlay material. In the process of applying the weld bead to the tube, a heat affected zone is created within the tube. Thereafter, a second weld head is employed to apply sufficient heat to the exterior of the tube to raise the temperature within the heat-affected zone to a temperature higher than its tempering temperature but lower than its Ae1 temperature. In this manner the heat affected zone is eliminated without creating a new heat affected zone in the process.In the disclosed embodiment, the tube is rotated with respect to the weld heads, while the weld heads move along the longitudinal axis of the tube. According to the disclosed embodiment, the first weld head employs a gas-metal arc welding process, and the second weld head employs a gas-tungsten arc welding process.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of cladded metal pipes facilitates joining of a tube blank and a coaxially disposed pipe section received therein, for subsequent extrusion of a resultant tube blank-pipe combination to form an internally-clad pipe of desired dimension.
