An elevator system has a suspension member for supporting and/or moving an elevator car and being guided and driven by a traction sheave of a drive unit. The suspension member is a cord or rope that includes a body made of a polymer and at least one tension member made of wires extending in the longitudinal direction of and embedded in the body. A thickest wire in the tension member has a bending stress σb in a range from 350 N/mm2 to 900 N/mm2 when bending the tension member about a minimum bending radius r, and wherein the bending stress is a function of the elastic modulus E and the diameter δ of the thickest wire, according to the equation σb=(δ*E)/2r, wherein the suspension member is run about a pulley having a minimum diameter D corresponding to no more than two times the minimum bending radius (D≦2r).

The perimeter strands of one embodiment all have a standard diameter, with the exception of one or more wires with different diameter from the other perimeter strands. A cord comprising at least a first pair and a second pair of wires (2a, 2b) of different diameter randomly disposed in transverse cross section thereof, is obtained by arranging in a nacelle (7) of a double-twisting laying machine, a twister (16) operating upstream of a preformer (15). The twister (16), rotating in a direction opposite to that of the impeller (5) and at a speed which is twice that of the impeller, neutralizes the internal torsional stresses induced in the wires (2a, 2b) by effect of the double twisting carried out upon the action of the impeller itself. Thus, a better control of the preforming operation executed on the wires (2a, 2b) disposed parallel in respectively coplanar axes is enabled. The obtained cord (1), within each laying pitch and only under a traction condition involving a load not exceeding 5 kg, has at least one right cross section in which at least one wire (2a, 2b) is spaced apart from at least one of the adjacent wires so as to facilitate the rubberizing step, by enabling access of the blend to the cross section and penetration thereof along the cord axis. The cord is preferably used as a reinforcing element for the belt structure.

An oval or elliptical shaped overhead conductor that is twisted along its length to provide a continuously varying profile to the wind. A single core is comprised of a circular center wire wrapped by circular wires and the core is surrounded or encased by one or more layers of wire strands, including strands of different size from that of the core wires. Each layer is helically wound in a direction opposite to the underlying layers. The surrounding strands may be circular, with the strand sizes symmetrically arranged to result in a substantially oval or elliptical cross-section. Alternatively, the strands may be shaped into symmetrically arranged non-circular arcuate cross-sections, which when wound together result in an oval or elliptical conductor cross-section. The core strands are each circular or round wires having the same diameter, with the result that the core is easy and inexpensive to manufacture. The conductor is capable of manufacture in one step by winding the core and outer layers at the same time. A helical winding along the length of the conductor results in altering the profile that is presented to the wind, thereby substantially cancelling wind-induced forces in adjacent conductor segments or regions, thus damping conductor vibrations.
