Breathing assist kits having a cranio-cervical extension device and a strapless breathing mask are presented. The mask comprises a seal that couples the mask to a victim's face preferably using an adhesive gasket that ensures the mask does not become dislodged while a care giver provides assisted breathing. The mask can also include, among other enhancements, a window or a light gathering lens to provide a view into the victim's mouth.

The disclosure describes a novel approach for displaying information on a ventilator system. The disclosure describes a novel respiratory system including a removable primary display and system status display. Further, the disclosure describes a novel method for displaying ventilator information and a novel method for controlling a ventilator system.

One or more embodiments of the presently described invention provides a ventilator including a timing device, an electric power source and a flow control device. The timing device is electronically controlled and is capable of controlling a period of time that a fluid is delivered to a patient. The timing device can control this period of time using a solenoid. The flow control device controls a rate of flow that the fluid is delivered to the patient. The flow control device can control the rate of flow using a plurality of orifices. The timing device and flow control device are separate from one another and each is capable of being operated independent of the other.

An emergency ventilation apparatus, system, and method for providing ventilation to patients in emergency situations, the system comprising an angled laryngoscope handle and a ventilation-aid securement device. The handle is configured to hold a laryngoscope blade between approximately twenty and forty degrees relative to a lower portion of the handle for more effective intubation of patients. The securement device fits atop a portion of a ventilating mask and is adjustably secured to the patient fitted with the mask by an adjustable strap or similar device. The securement device fits flexibly over the mask providing a seal between the mask and the patient's face. A version of the securement device includes a thumbscrew for engaging with the mask to secure it. Another version of the securement device is further capable of securing an endotracheal tube to a patient using a thumbscrew to advance a retaining arm for engaging the tube.

A humidifier (14) for humidifying a flow of breathable gas to be delivered to a patient includes a chamber (16) configured to receive the flow of breathable gas; a tub (20) configured to contain a supply of water, the tub being configured to be inserted into the chamber; a lid (18) provided on the chamber and being movable between an open position and a closed position; and a seal (19) provided on the lid, the seal being configured to seal the chamber such that the flow of breathable gas pressurizes the chamber. The humidifier may be connectable to a flow generator (12) configured to generate the flow of breathable gas. A tube for delivering the humidified flow may be connected to the humidifier. The tube may be a heated or non-heated tube. A respiratory apparatus for delivering a flow of breathable gas to a patient may include the humidifier and the flow generator and/or the tube. A method of humidifying a flow of breathable gas comprises sealing a chamber containing a supplying a water and pressurizing the chamber by directing the flow of breathable gas into the chamber.

An aircraft emergency oxygen dispensing device includes an oxygen storage vessel having a frangible pressure seal, and a manifold, a pressure regulator, one or more flow control valves connected to the oxygen storage vessel. The manifold includes an initiator for breaking the pressure seal to initiate a flow of oxygen. A flow controller controls the flow control valves to dispense small quantities of oxygen by a pulse oxygen system or a modulated oxygen system based on ambient cabin air pressure. In the pulse oxygen system, the flow controller further controls the flow control valves based on input from at least one breathing mask air pressure sensor that monitors the breathing of a user.

A pressure generating system and method for generating a flow of fluid at a pressure above atmospheric pressure. The system includes a pressure generator and a valve that controls the pressure/flow of gas delivered to the patient. The system monitors energy provided to the valve, a characteristics associated with movement of the valve, a position of the valve, or any combination thereof. In addition, the controller controls an operating speed of the pressure generator such that the valve operates over a majority of the range of positions during use of the pressure support system.

A method for monitoring patient's breathing action response to changes in a ventilator applied breathing support, where a) a desired target range for a breathing gas indication of O2-consumption for the patient is first determined, after which b) the ventilator applied breathing support is changed, and c) the breathing gas indication of O2-consumption of said patient is measured and d) compared with the desired target range. At least the steps b)-d) are repeated to maintain the measured breathing gas indication of O2-consumption of said patient within the desired target range. A system for monitoring a patient's breathing action is also provided.
