A process for producing a natural sweetening enhancer composition comprising at least an Rebaudioside C (RC) extract, said process comprises the steps of preparing a saccharide mother liquor comprising an RC mass content of at least 15%; preparing feed liquid from about 8-25 mg/L of the mother liquor; flowing feed liquid through a porous adsorption column, having a pore size of between about 0.001 to 0.2 micron, and at a flow rate of between 25 to 35 L/m2h and at a pH of between 6 to 8; eluting RC extract with alcohol, said RC extract having a mass concentration of at least 10%; fractionally collecting eluate based on chromatographic critical point for RC extract; concentrating the RC extract and drying the extract so formed. Another process for preparing a crude RC extract which comprises the steps of preparing a saccharide mother liquor into a feedstock solution with a mass concentration of about 0.5-1%; passing the solution through an ultrafiltration membrane device at a flow rate of 25-35 L/m2h, with a molecular weight cut-off at about 5500-6500 DA and at a pH of between about 6.5-7.5, collecting and then concentrating the RC filtrate from about 55° C. to 65° C., drying solid and liquid fractions obtained from the concentrate separately to provide a crude RC extract. Extracts obtained from processes above are further refined by crystallization from water-alcohols (e.g. ethanol and methanol)-acetone mixed solvents to provide a crystalline solid comprising high content of RC.

The invention provides a process for producing alcohol from a cellulosic material, said process comprising: hydrolyzing said cellulosic material with an aqueous acid to produce a hydrolysate; extracting acid and water from said hydrolysate with a water-miscible organic extraction solvent to yield (a) a first aqueous acidic solution containing said extraction solvent and (b) a residue containing sugars; subjecting said residue to an oligosaccharide cleavage reaction to yield an aqueous solution of fermentable sugars; fermenting said fermentable sugars and distilling alcohol from the resulting fermented mixture; contacting said first aqueous acidic solution with a pressurized fluid lipophilic solvent in non-gaseous form, which fluid solvent is substantially water-immiscible and is gaseous at ambient conditions, to yield a second aqueous acid solution and a solvent mixture of said extraction solvent and said fluid solvent; depressurizing said solvent mixture to release said extraction solvent for recycling; and, optionally, concentrating said second aqueous acid solution for recycling.

The present invention relates to nutritionally enriched maple syrup, which is enriched in vitamins, and more particularly to nutritionally enriched maple syrup which contains vitamin C in an amount of 50 mg or more based on 100 ml of maple syrup obtained by thermally concentrating a maple sap. The present invention also includes maple syrup enriched in vitamins such as vitamin E and vitamin B1 and other nutrients. According to the present invention, the nutritional value and quality of maple syrup, particularly maple syrup obtained by thermal concentration, can be improved and the range of its use for other foods can be widened. Nutrient enrichment can be carried out by an efficient method suited for industrial scale production. Moreover, the nutritionally enriched maple syrup of the present invention exhibits a well-balanced flavor, and thus it can be widely added to various foods.

The invention involves admixing a first quantity of a powdered sugar and a second quantity of an adjuvant, such as an invert sugar, to provide a sugar blend. The sugar blend has up to about 3 percent moisture. The invention then involves mixing the sugar blend with a high shear extruding means at a temperature between about 220.degree. F. and about 300.degree. F. with a residence time in the extruding means of between about 0.5 second and about 12 seconds. The invention includes the product of a combined phase recrystallized sugar.

A method and apparatus for removing the skins or hulls from seeds, including those of legumes, grains, drupes, silques, and achenes involves wetting the seeds with an alkaline solution and then with a peroxygen solution. The two substances react underneath the skin to liberate gas between the seed meat and the skin. The gas bubbles blister the skin, causing it to become loosened. Slight mechanical action is used to dislodge the blistered skins from the seed meats.
