Abstract: An apparatus is configured with a component having a coating comprising a material in a first phase (e.g., solid and/or liquid phase) with a transition temperature. The component is mechanically and/or electrically attached to a substrate. Exposure of the coating to a temperature that meets or exceeds the transition temperature causes the material to undergo a phase change. The phase change of the material alters the position of the component, including separation of the component from the substrate. The separation disrupts the attachment, thereby mitigating damage to the substrate and/or component.

Abstract: A flame-retardant vanillin-derived cross-linker, a process for forming a flame-retardant polymer, and an article of manufacture comprising a material that contains the flame-retardant vanillin-derived cross-linker are disclosed. The flame-retardant vanillin-derived cross-linker can be synthesized from vanillin obtained from a bio-based source, and can have at least one phosphoryl or phosphonyl moiety with phenyl, allyl, epoxide, propylene carbonate, or thioether substituents. The process for forming the flame-retardant polymer can include reacting a diol vanillin derivative and a flame-retardant phosphorus-based molecule to form the flame-retardant vanillin-derived cross-linker, and binding the flame-retardant vanillin-derived cross-linker to a polymer. The material in the article of manufacture can be flame-retardant, and contain flame-retardant vanillin-derived cross-linkers. Examples of materials that can be in the article of manufacture can include resins, plastics, adhesives, polymers, etc.

Abstract: Embodiments described herein relate to a reusable chemical cold pack. The apparatus includes a body which defines a chamber having two volumes separated by a thin film composite membrane. The thin film composite membrane includes a fabric material sheet, a thermoplastic polymer material sheet, and a polyamide material sheet. A first volume disposed on one side of the thin film composite membrane contains a solvent and a second volume disposed on an opposite side of the thin film composite membrane contains a solute. A check valve is disposed through the thin film composite membrane and enables mixing of the solvent and the solute. The solvent and the solute may also be separated after mixing by diffusion of the solvent through the thin film composite membrane.

Abstract: A block copolymer is synthesized by polymerizing a silane-functionalized norbornene monomer in the presence of a catalyst system that includes a Ziegler-Natta catalyst and cocatalyst, followed by sequential addition and polymerization of a matrix-reactive functionalized norbornene monomer. In some embodiments, an enhanced substrate for a PCB is produced by applying the block copolymer to a substrate that includes glass fiber, followed by applying the base polymer to the substrate having the block copolymer applied thereto.

Abstract: A fuel tank containing a fuel and oil mixture is managed to determine if the fuel and oil mixture contains the correct ratio for a motor. The fuel tank containing a fuel and oil mixture is monitored. A fuel to oil ratio is selected for the motor. A combined viscosity of the fuel and oil mixture is calculated with respect to the fuel to oil ratio, and the temperature of the fuel and oil mixture. The combined viscosity is used to determine a predetermined range of the combined viscosity. The viscosity of the fuel and oil mixture within the fuel tank is measured as a measured viscosity. If the measured viscosity of the fuel and oil mixture does not correspond with the predetermined range, then a user may be alerted that the measured viscosity does not correspond with the predetermined range.

Abstract: An ink composition includes a fluid and a plurality of microcapsules suspended in the fluid. The fluid includes a first chemical compound that exhibits a first color characteristic in a first pH range and exhibits a second color characteristic in a second pH range, where the first color characteristic is visually distinct from the second color characteristic. A second chemical compound is contained within the microcapsules, such that rupturing at least a subset of the plurality of microcapsules releases the second chemical compound. Releasing the second chemical compound shifts a pH of the fluid from a first pH in the first pH range to a second pH in the second pH range.

Abstract: An enhanced substrate for use in printed circuit boards (PCBs) includes low-Dk-core glass fibers having low dielectric constant (Dk) cores. In some embodiments, the low-Dk-core glass fibers are filled with a low Dk fluid, such as a gas (e.g., air, nitrogen and/or a noble gas) or a liquid. After via holes are drilled or otherwise formed in the substrate, silane is applied to the ends of hollow glass fibers exposed in the via holes to seal the low Dk fluid within the cores of the hollow glass fibers. In some embodiments, the low-Dk-core glass fibers are filled with a solid (e.g., a low Dk resin). For example, a hollow glass fiber may be provided, and then filled with a low Dk resin in a liquid state. The low Dk resin within the hollow glass fiber is then cured to a solid state.
