A solar liquid heating system having a collector receiving solar energy and heating a liquid. A liquid transfer pump moves the heated liquid to a heat transfer tank which heats water. The collector has a plate assembly mounted on a frame. Heat insulated bottoms, sides, and ends surrounded by the frame form an elongated chamber accommodating the plate assembly. The plate assembly has a plurality of side-by-side longitudinal plates. Adjacent plates have generally C-shaped sections that are located about a longitudinal tube for carrying liquid. Adjacent plates have lip and hook inter-connecting structures that cooperate with each other to clamp the tube between the C-shaped sections of the plates. The opposite ends of the tubes are connected to transverse tubular headers. The headers project through resilient grommets mounted on the sides of the frame. The top sides of the plate assembly are coated with black solar energy absorbing material. A light transparent cover encloses the plate assembly within the chamber of the collector.

Disclosed herein is a solar heat collector which is placed across an open window area for selectively heating the interior of a dwelling place or the like. The collector includes a plurality of fins transversely disposed across the window area between two panes of translucent material which form an insulating chamber. One end of the chamber communicates with a warm air outlet, the other end with a cool air inlet and the innermost pane is coated with a highly reflective material. Each fin is provided with an energy absorbant coating on one side thereof and has a reflective coating surface on the other so that upon normally aligning the absorbant side of the fins with respect to the sun's rays, the air within the chamber is heated and directed to the warm air outlet causing cold air to be drawn into the chamber through the cool air inlet. Reversal of the orientation of the fins causes incoming rays to be reflected.

A focusing multi-point high-concentrator optical system is disclosed. The system is useful for concentrating energy such as solar radiation for use in solar energy conversion systems. The configuration of the optical system incorporates thin metallized Fresnel reflector elements applied to panels formed into focusing surfaces having a common axis. The Fresnel elements are oriented axially to the axis of the focusing surfaces. The optical configuration produces a substantially rectangular focal zone centered over each panel. For a plurality of panels of a given width, there will be a plurality of focal zones, each separated by a distance equivalent to the panel width. At least one energy absorber is maintained substantially at each focal zone and may comprise a photovoltaic cell, thermal absorber, etc. and combinations thereof.

Exemplary of such materials is silicon which is etched in a reactive sputtering process in the presence of a sputterable material. Other materials exhibiting useful properties are produced by this method.

A solar-energy collector has a frame receiving a double-pane unit consisting of a pair of transparent panes hermetically sealed together and defining the flow chamber for the heat-collecting fluid. The frame also supports a cover pane which defines, with the aforementioned unit, a heat-insulating dead-air space. The pane of the unit turned toward the sun is provided with an emission-limiting coating on its side facing the dead-air space while the pane of the unit turned away from the sun is provided with means for increasing its heat-absorption capacity. The frame members at opposite sides of the collector can be provided with fittings for connecting the collector to a source of the heat-absorbing fluid and to the output line of the collector.
