Abstract:
Disclosed is a curable coating composition that includes a compound having both hydroxy functionality and carbamate functionality of the structure ##STR1## wherein R is H or alkyl, a polyisocyanate crosslinking agents and an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The effective equivalents of the aminoplast crosslinking agent is equal to or less than the equivalents of carbamate functionality and the effective equivalents of polyisocyanate crosslinker is equal to or less than the equivalents of hydroxyl functionality. The carbamate-functional resin and the aminoplast crosslinking agent provide rheology control during the early part of the bake to cure an applied coating of the coating composition.
Abstract:
An aqueous protective coating composition particularly useful for can coatings based on a polymeric binder comprises diepoxide crosslinked microgel particles. The microgel polymer is produced by dispersing into water a carboxyl functional acrylic-epoxy copolymer and combined with a carboxyl functional latex polymer along with a low molecular weight diepoxide, followed by coreaction and crosslinking between the carboxyl polymers and the diepoxide to form stable aqueous dispersed microgel particles. In a preferred aspect of the invention, the carboxyl latex polymer is a swollen latex polymer.
Abstract:
Aqueous, heat-curable coating compound containing from 38.5 to 80% by weight of one or more film-forming copolymers and/or cocondensates which are emulsifiable in water or rendered water soluble by neutralisation with bases, having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of from 800 to 10,000, a hydroxyl number of from 60 to 390 and an acid number of from 15 to 60, B) from 0 to 25.5% by weight of one or more polyester oligomers having a calculated molecular weight of from 200 to 1000, a hydroxyl number of from 280 to 600 and an acid number of from 0 to 1.5, C) from 3.5 to 40% by weight of one or more amine resin cross-linking agents and D) from 0.5 to 28% by weight of one or more masked polyisocyanates, the percentages by weight of components A) to D) being based in each case on the solids contents by weight of the resins and adding up to 100% by weight, and water and optionally one or more organic solvents, pigments, fillers and/or the conventional auxiliary agents and additives used in lacquers.
Abstract:
Sulfonimide cure catalysts are used with aminoplast crosslinking agents and resins capable of reacting with aminoplast crosslinking agents to prepare heat curable compositions capable of crosslinking to form coatings and articles. Liquid or solid curable compositions may be prepared. Solid sulfonimide catalysts used in combination with solid glycoluril type crosslinking agents are well suited for powder coating systems containing hydroxy- and carboxy-functional resins.
Abstract:
The use of an amine salt of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid as a catalyst for the curing of hydroxyl-functional resins provides a wrinkle finish. The hydroxy-function may be present in polyesters, epoxies, and acrylate or methacrylate resins, among others. The polyester resins which are able to provide such a finish have a hot plate melt flow of at least about 50 mm but if it is more than 150 mm, the gel time of the resin must not be more than about 280 seconds. The minimum gel time in the case of polyesters is about 30 seconds.

Abstract:
A resinous composition for water paint crosslinkable at the normal temperature is provided, which is suitable for painting interiors and exteriors of buildings, bridges, vehicles and et al, which is non-odored, as well as which has advantages in safe and hygienic aspects. A resinous composition for a water paint, which is obtained by blending an aqueous dispersion of a carbonyl group-containing copolymer (A) with a carbonyl group-containing aqueous polyurethane resin (B) at the ratio of 100 parts by weight of solids in (A) to 5.about.150 parts by weight of (B), and then adding as a crosslinking agent a hydrazide compound having at least 2 hydrazide groups per one molecule (C) at the ratio of 0.01.about.2 moles of (C) to 1 mole of carbonyl group contained in the said (A) and (B) components, wherein the said polyurethane resin (B) being obtained by copolymerizing an unsaturated polyurethane resin obtained by the reaction of a diisocyanate compound with a polyol having a number average molecular weight of 60.about.10,000, a carboxyl group-containing diol and a hydroxyl group-containing ethylenic unsaturated monomer with a carboxyl group-containing ethylene unsaturated monomer.
Abstract:

Abstract:
A copolymer with an acid value less than one contains alternating units of a vinyl monomer and a diester of a dicarboxylic acid wherein at least one of the esterifying groups contains a polyether group. The copolymer is particularly useful in preparing pigment dispersions for coating compositions. Such compositions exhibit properties including reduced pigment settling and improved metallic flake orientation, flow and leveling.
