    摘要: A wireless access point is operable to execute background scans of alternate channels by tuning to the alternate channel for short periods of time, thereby generating sub-windows of data. The sub-windows are calculated to have timing and duration that avoid disruption of communications on the active channel. Multiple background scan sub-windows are used to assemble a virtual target window of the alternate channel, e.g., a 100 mSec window, during which any periodic beacon within range might be expected to be received. The data such as beacon information is employed to generate a table ranking the alternate channels in terms of viability for communications.

    摘要: A self service data interface includes communications logic providing communications with a personal data device and a data infrastructure, such as the computer resources in a department or building. A processor executes a data interface management process that communicates with the data infrastructure to obtain information about available data services, where the information includes information about how the available data services are accessed. The data interface management process also communicates with the personal data device to provide the information about the available data services to the user. The information is used by the personal data device to invoke the services directly via the self service data interface. The self service interface can have multiple communications links to the personal data device, such as a wire link and a wireless link. The information from the self service data interface can be provided as a hypertext page that is accessed and handled by a browser within the personal data device.

    摘要: A previously unknown wireless device, which may be either an access point or a station, is detected by receipt of transmissions from that device at one or more access points that are currently operating within a managed wireless network. A graphic representation of the newly detected device is displayed in a region of a user interface external to a region containing a representation of the physical environment of the managed wireless network. A user selects a number of known access points from which an estimated distance to the newly detected device is to be determined and represented. A representation is generated of an estimated distance from each one of the selected number of access points, such as those access points that are estimated to be physically closest to the newly detected device, for example on the asis of signal strength with regard to transmissions from the newly detected device received at the known access points. The distance representations from the known access points may be provided using substantially circular “distance rings”, displayed in the region of the user interface containing a representation of the physical environment in which the wireless network is deployed. The distance rings enable a user to may observe one or more distance ring intersections indicating one or more potential positions within the wireless network's physical environment at which the newly detected device may be located.

    摘要: A bridge (62) capable of reducing unwanted WAN multicast packet traffic in a LAN and an associated method and an associated LAN is disclosed. The bridge examines the contents of WAN multicast query and report packets and WAN multicast router-to-router discovery packets and includes this information in its filtering database (88). The bridge designates ports on which query packets or MRRDPs are received as router ports. When there is no WAN router generating multicast query packets into the LAN, the bridge simulates the behavior of a WAN router and generates WAN multicast query packets so as to cause report packet generation by end systems. A timeout interval for undesignating router ports and a method for determining an appropriate timeout for a port is disclosed.
