A liquid crystal display apparatus which have a circular polarizer and a liquid crystal display in a stack. The liquid crystal display has a chilral nematic liquid crystal layer between substrates, and on the mutually opposite sides of the substrates, electrodes and aligning layers are formed. The liquid crystal switches between a planar alignment state and a focal-conic alignment state depending on the voltage applied thereto through the electrodes. In a planar state, light reflected by the electrodes is absorbed by the circular polarizer, and a black display is made. In a focal-conic state, light reflected by the electrodes passes through the circular polarizer, and a white display is made. The liquid crystal is driven by a chain of voltage pulses including a reset step of resetting the liquid crystal to a homeotropic state, a selection step of selecting the alignment state of the liquid crystal under zero-volt application and an evolution step of causing the liquid crystal to evolve to the selected alignment state.

The liquid crystal domains in the pixel regions near the first substrate are in a mixed state of polydomain and monodomain states. The liquid crystal domains in the pixel regions near the first substrate have a first ratio between the liquid crystal domains taking the polydomain and monodomain states. The liquid crystal domains in the pixel regions near the second substrate have a second ratio between the liquid crystal domains taking the polydomain and monodomain states. The device, capable of continuously and variably controlling the intake valve timing phase, includes: an advance chamber which hydraulically rotates a vane rotor and a camshaft on the advance side relative to the timing rotor; a retard chamber for rotating the camshaft on the retard side relative to the timing rotor; an advance-retard oil pressure control valve; an oil communicating passage for fluid communication between the advance chamber and the retard chamber; a hydraulic piston, flow control valve which controls the oil in the communicating passage according to the retard chamber pressure when the engine is running at a low speed and a high oil temperature; and a ball valve check valve which checks the oil flow from the advance chamber to the retard chamber.

In a microcellular system operated in the same frequency band as a cellular system, an interference-free channel is automatically searched and allocated. The microcellular system which shares the frequency band with the cellular system comprises a control unit, a base station and a multi-channel selecting receiver. The multi-channel selecting receiver monitors a use status of cellular channels of the band by repetitively scanning voice channels for a scanning time period substantially longer than the duration of any single voice communication to detect idling channels and allocates them to its own system. Whenever a communication request is issued, the base station detect a channel not used by its own system from the idling channels and allocates it for communication.

A vaporized fuel control apparatus according to the present invention is provided in an internal-combustion engine at least including a plurality of cylinders and each cylinder having a fuel injector, an intake tube mounted to the cylinders, a fuel tank, and a canister connected to the fuel tank. The vaporized fuel control apparatus includes a purge valve and an electronic control unit for controlling the opening/closing of the purge valve. The purge valve is provided in a purge passage connected between the canister and intake tube, the canister being filled by an absorbing material to absorb a fuel vaporized from the fuel tank. The electronic control unit controls an amount of purged gas flowing into the intake tube by controlling the opening/closing timing and the duty ratio of the purge valve in such a way that the purge valve is opened at a timing when a stroke of a particular cylinder reaches the same stroke at a next cycle in synchronization with an engine rotational speed, and an amount of the fuel supplied to the particular cylinder is reduced in accordance with an amount corresponding to an inflow amount of the purged gas.

The cooling apparatus is provided for generating air flows for cooling the adsorption units. The fan is operated when the engine, in a cold state, is started. The operation of the fan is continued until a catalytic converter arranged downstream from the adsorption units becomes effective, i.e. the temperature of the catalytic converter is higher than a predetermined value.
