摘要: Apparatus and methods are described that project images onto the retina of an eye. The apparatus can include an image memory element for storing an image signal representative of a visual image, a projection element in electrical circuit with the image memory element for generating an optical image signal of the type suitable for detection by a retina and being representative of the visual image, and a focus element that is adapted for implantation into the eye at a position in the eye which is posterior to the cornea and anterior to the retina and that is optically coupled to the projection element for focusing the optical image onto the retina. The projection element can include a display device that is dimensionally adapted for disposition within the eye at a position posterior to the cornea. The display device can be a liquid crystal display element that has an illuminator element optically coupled to the display device or alternatively can include a laser diode element that optically couples to a scanning mirror that projects light through a damaged cornea.

摘要: A cornea holder for independently holding a predetermined portion of cornea tissue having a corneal button, an endothelial surface and an epithelial surface includes a one-piece, ring-like support member having a bore defining a passageway therethrough. One end of the ring-like member has a plurality of circumferentially spaced support fingers extending inwardly and upwardly therefrom. The support fingers have internally facing bevelled tips diverging outwardly from the passageway to independently support the predetermined portion of cornea tissue endothelial-side up such that the corneal button is suspended in the passageway. A cornea cutting system is also disclosed wherein a rotatable cutting element is moveable through the passageway and engageable solely with the predetermined portion of cornea tissue such that the predetermined portion of cornea tissue is cut along a circumference of the predetermined portion of cornea tissue in a manner which will preserve the number of cells in the endothelial and epithelial surfaces.

摘要: A composite device which may be implanted in the cornea of the human eye to replace damaged or diseased portions, and a method of manufacturing the said device, are disclosed. The device consists of a transparent central portion intimately attached to an opaque spongy rim. Both portions are made of hydrogel materials produced in different conditions of polymerization during a two-stage process performed in a specific moulding unit. The spongy rim promotes and maintains cellular invasion from the host corneal tissue, thus providing a tight union between implant and recipient cornea which prevents the postoperative extrusion of the implant.

摘要: A lenticule is bonded to the eye as part of its formation process by curing or final curing the lenticule on the eye. Such lenticules provide a smooth transition from the body of the lenticule to Bowman's layer on which the lenticule is disposed. The lenticule at the time its material or precursor is placed on the eye may vary from being essentially all viscous collagen which flows and must be molded to obtain a desired lenticule configuration to a substantially stable preform which holds its own shape. Such preformed lenticules may be formed using an appropriate mold and photopolymerization or other partial curing techniques to pre-cure the lenticule material to an appropriate stage for application to the eye. In one method, such a partially cured lenticule precursor is formed in layers by depositing a quantity of curable viscous collagen in an anterior surface mold, partially curing the viscous collagen, and repeatedly depositing and partially curing subsequent collagen layers until a preform having a desired thickness has been formed.

摘要: A method for locating on the cornea an optical lens having a preselected geometric shape and power wherein the optical lens is formed of a collagen-hydrogel for promoting epithelial cell growth is shown. The method comprises the steps of: removing from Bowman's membrane over the area of the pupillary zone of the eye a portion of the corneal epithelium; forming on Bowman's membrane a "V" shaped annular groove having a diameter substantially equal to the maximum geometrical dimensions of the optical lens and a preselected depth; dissecting the peripheral edge of the groove forming a wing of corneal tissue having a preselected length; placing the posterior surface of the optical lens on the anterior surface of Bowman's membrane and positioning the outer edge of the optical lens under the corneal wing, and affixing the optical lens to Bowman's membrane over the pupillary zone of the eye to maintain the same on the cornea with the corneal wing overlying the edge of the optical lens. With the edge of the lens in contact with corneal epithelim, the collagen-hydrogel for promoting epithelial cell growth interacts with epithelial cells during a healing period to promote growth thereof over, and attach to, the anterior surface of the optical lens implanting the same under corneal epithelium.

摘要: A corneal implant and method of making the same utilizes a corneal plug removed from an eye, frozen solid, and centrally bored to, but not through, its Bowman's or its Descemet's membrane. An artificial plug which is optically clear is inserted in the bore of the corneal plug and attached thereto. The corneal plug with the artificial plug therein is thereafter implanted in a corresponding opening in the cornea of the patient's eye providing a transparent window free of fluid leakage.
