A fiber having increased cut resistance is made from a fiber-forming polymer and a hard filler having a Mohs Hardness Value greater than about 3. The filler is included in an amount of about 0.05% to about 20% by weight. In preferred embodiments, the fiber-forming polymer is poly(ethylene terephthalate) or a liquid crystalline polyester comprising monomer units derived from 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. Preferred fillers include tungsten and alumina.

Automobile seats having improved comfort have a spacer layer included within the layers of cushioning materials. The spacer layer has a large void volume and nearly unrestricted flow of air. Heated, cooled or ambient air can be forced into the spacer layer of the seat, making the seat more comfortable with respect to temperature and removal of perspiration.

A process for making a transparent film comprising a liquid crystalline polymer, and a transparent film made thereby having high barrier properties. In this process, the LCP is dissolved in an appropriate solvent, then cast into a film at ambient or near-ambient temperatures. The film optionally may be dried at elevated temperatures and/or reduced pressures to remove the solvent. The film is then annealed at a temperature between the glass transition temperature (T.sub.g) and the melting point temperature (T.sub.m) of the polymer. The result is a highly transparent film having liquid crystalline morphology and high barrier properties.

This invention provides novel liquid crystalline polymers which, when mixed with a suitable dye and extruded, yields polarizer films with superior polarizing efficiency, transmittance, dichroic ratio, and thermal and humidity stability. A melt consolidated, multiaxially oriented liquid crystal polymer ("LCP") sheet or other article formed from LCP particles. One embodiment includes a multi-component LCP sheet in which particles of a higher melting LCP are imbedded in a matrix of a lower melting LCP. These LCP components are formed into sheet at a temperature between the melting point of the lower melting matrix LCP and the higher melting reinforcing LCP, so that the imbedded LCP particles may maintain their shape, orientation, and mechanical characteristics while the matrix LCP component flows around the particles and forms a solid sheet. In another embodiment, LCP particles are melt consolidated to form a single article in which a significant amount of LCP orientation is retained. A sheet of this invention may be formed by a variety of processes, and may be made from recycled scrap LCP.
