摘要: A slider mounted TAMR (Thermal Assisted Magnetic Recording), DFH (Dynamic Flying Height) type read/write head using optical-laser generated surface plasmons in a small antenna to locally heat a magnetic medium, uses the same optical laser at low power to pre-heat the antenna. Maintaining the antenna at this pre-heated temperature, approximately 50% of its highest temperature during write operations, allows the DFH mechanism sufficient time to compensate for the thermal protrusion of the antenna at that lower temperature, so that thermal protrusion transients are significantly reduced when a writing operation occurs and full laser power is applied. The time constant for antenna protrusion is less than the time constant for DFH fly height compensation, so, without pre-heating, the thermal protrusion of the antenna due to absorption of optical radiation cannot be compensated by the DFH effect.

摘要: A sound recording device includes a disk drive, a microphone, and a controller. The disk drive writes data on a rotatable data storage disk therein. The microphone generates a microphone signal which includes a desired sound component and a noise component from noise that is generated by the disk drive. The controller filters the microphone signal to reduce the noise component from the disk drive relative to the desired sound component, and writes the filtered microphone signal on the disk. Accordingly, noise from the disk drive can be attenuated during recording by the sound recording device.

摘要: We describe a system for electric field assisted magnetic recording where a recordable magnetic medium includes a magnetic recording layer of high coercivity and vertical magnetic anisotropy that is adjacent to an electrostrictive layer which can be placed in a state of stress by a electric field or which is already pre-stressed and which pre-stress can be turned into strain by an electric field. When the magnetic medium is acted on simultaneously by a magnetic writing field and an electric field, the stress in the elctrostrictive layer is transferred to a magnetostrictive layer which is the magnetic recording layer by itself or is coupled to the magnetic recording layer, whereupon the magnetic recording layer is made more isotropic and more easily written upon. Residual stresses in the electrostrictive layer can then be removed by an additional electric field of opposite sign to the stress-producing field.

摘要: A microactuator incorporated within an actuator assembly of a disk drive is used as a detection element for rapid off track events that may occur. Preferably, the microactuator employs one or more piezoelectric elements used for purposes of secondary actuation. Uncontrolled movement of the actuator across the disk results in the piezoelectric elements generating a voltage spike or signal that is analyzed to determine whether a rapid off track event has occurred. Rapid off track events are distinguished from other possible events, such as shock events. If a rapid off track event is detected, then remedial actions are taken to restore data integrity, to include executing restore commands such as rewriting selected data tracks. Dedicated piezoelectric elements may also be provided for detecting rapid off track events wherein these elements are not incorporated in the servo loop that controls positioning of the actuator.

摘要: A system provided for protecting a disk drive from impact damages. More specifically, a disk drive is provided that includes an accelerometer interconnected to a printed circuit board that detects free fall of the disk drive. In addition, the velocity of spinning disks of the disk drive is also monitored to assess changes in velocity thereof that may indicate the presence of a tumbling condition. Furthermore, the change in acceleration measured by the accelerometer is monitored to prevent false indications of free fall due to common vibrations. Thus an enhanced system is provided that protects disk drives from the effect of free falls under a wide variety of conditions and allowing for drops from shorter distances to be identified.
