A puffing swirler for use in an internal combustion engine. The puffing swirler causes the air and vaporized fuel mixture to have a controlled high velocity swirling action within the piston cylinder of the engine to provide improved high efficiency combustion of the fuel therein. The puffing swirler includes a flow directing deflector movable with the inlet valve and defining a plurality of swirl-inducing passages. A flow control device is provided for preventing delivery of the fuel fluid to the inlet port until the piston has moved substantially from the top position toward the bottom position thereof, thereby producing a substantial preselected pressure differential between the fluid supply and the cylinder to effect the desired puffing delivery of the fluid to the cylinder. Structure may be provided to releasably retain the flow control device in the full open position as during high speed operation of the engine. The puffing swirler may further include structure to provide delivery selectively through one or more swirl-inducing passages of the flow directing device. The flow control device may be made adjustable for adjusting the pressure differential at which the puff delivery takes place.

In order to provide a controlled turbulence or angular momentum of air, air and fuel mixtures or similar fluids to be injected into the cylinder chamber of valve controlled internal combustion engines, control vanes are provided in close proximity to the valve retaining ring. The vanes deflect the flow of the air or air/fuel mixture without restricting the flow thus increasing the fuel flow coefficient. The vanes are curved to accommodate the fluid in-flow while ensuring controlled turbulence or angular momentum of the fluid in the cylinder chamber. The vanes can be arranged on a ring which is fastened in the inlet chamber in close proximity to the valve retaining ring.

The inventive subject matter provides apparatus, systems and methods for treating a fuel prior to ignition in a combustion engine in order to improve efficiency. In one aspect of the invention a throttle valve system that entrains a flow of gas, which can include a fuel, into a structured flow pattern via the inclusion of topological on a surface of the valve body and/or the flow chamber. The topological features can be arranged in a pattern configured to produce movement and/or structured turbulence in a stream of gas that is introduced to the throttle valve. An excitation source that ionizes or cracks species in the gas stream can be optionally utilized.
