摘要: A relatively inexpensive mat is provided which through the application of heat and pressure readily can be densified to form rigid shaped articles having a reduced overall density. The mat is substantially free of a binder (e.g., a latex binder) and consists essentially of a substantially radom array of (a) relatively coarse cellulosic fibers, (b) thermoplastic synthetic polymer fibrils, (c) non-fibrous thermoplastic synthetic polymer particles, (d) substantially void-free substantially water-insoluble particulate inorganic material (e.g., talc), and (e) particulate void-containing substantially water-insoluble inorganic material (e.g., expanded volcanic glass) having a lesser density than component (d) in the specified quantities. A plurality of the mats while stacked together with similar mats of greater density on at least the upper and lower surfaces may be subjected to heat and pressure to accomplish densification and thermal bonding within and between adjoining mats to form a laminate. The presence of component (e) in conjunction with the other components has been found to enable the efficient control of the density in the resulting product regardless of the pressure applied during thermoforming. The resulting cellulosic fiber reinforced product can be used to advantage as a shaped rigid lightweight panel for use as an inner automobile door liner or in similar end uses which require a rigid sheet or panel having a predetermined configuration. A decorative surface optionally may be applied to the resulting article.

摘要: An electrochemical device includes an electrochemical device having an electrochemical cell located within the sealed first enclosure. The first enclosure has at least a portion that is flexible. A cavity is formed within the first enclosure so that the cavity is in fluidic communication with the electrochemical cell, and pressure inside the sealed first enclosure is less than one half pressure of pressure outside the sealed first enclosure.

摘要: An improved process is provided for the formation of metal ion containing carbon fibers which particularly are suited for utilization in electron shielding applications. An acrylic fibrous material is formed having substantially uniformly dispersed therein a halide of a transition metal. The metal halide (e.g. a chloride) present within the fibrous material is (1) converted to an oxide, (2) the fibrous material containing the metal oxide is heated in an oxygen-containing atmosphere until thermally stabilized, and (3) the thermally stabilized fibrous material is carbonized or carbonized and graphitized at a more highly elevated temperature in an appropriate atmosphere. The resulting product comprises ions of a transition metal substantially uniformly dispersed in an amorphous carbon or graphitic carbon matrix. The halide of a transition metal may be incorporated into the acrylic precursor by co-spinning and/or padding prior to thermal stabilization. The conversion of the halide of a transition metal to an oxide prior to thermal stabilization may be conducted by contact with a base or with an oxidizing agent as described.

摘要: An underprinted inlaid sheet material having unique design effects comprising:(a) a substrate,(b) a first layer of a resinous polymer composition,(c) a pattern or design, printed on the surface of the first layer and having two or more distinguishably different colored, printed portions, and(d) a second layer of a resinous polymer composition, overlying the surface of the printed first layer, in contact therewith, and containing a plurality of variously colored transparent, transluscent and/or opaque particles, substantially, uniformly dispersed throughout said second layer. The particle colors, which can be similar to, analogous to and, in a preferred embodiment, in contrast with the colors of the underprinted pattern or design, are selected in such a manner that, when the finished product is viewed, the colors of the underprinted pattern or design show through the transparent or transluscent areas of the second layer, and combine with the colors of the particles to produce varying shades of colorations which differ from one area to another and are different from the colors of the underprint. The resulting sheet material product exhibits an inlaid appearance with the illusion of three-dimensional depth.

摘要: An improved process, particularly adapted for making that type of sheet vinyl covering materials known as inlaids by first depositing resinous particles on a wet ungelled layer of PVC plastisol or organosol and then passing the sheet between a heated, cylindrical surface and a means for gradually and uniformly increasing the contact pressure between the cylindrical surface and the coated surface of the sheet. Upon completion of the step, a substantially uniformly, gelled matrix layer is produced, with the resinous particles embedded therein, and having a smooth and firm surface of uniform thickness.
