摘要: An energy absorbing apparatus includes particles with nanopores in a liquid. A further aspect employs a reusable energy absorbing apparatus including gas-liquid interactions in nanopores. Another aspect of the present apparatus uses oversolubility of gas in a solution to enhance bubble nucleation in hydrophobic nanopores or nanochannels, which suppresses gas outflow while promoting liquid outflow from particles. Still another aspect includes anions within an aqueous electrolytic solution, containing nanoporous material therein.

摘要: The disclosure relates to large area single crystal diamond (SCD) surfaces and substrates, and their methods of formation. Typical large area substrates can be at least about 25 mm, 50 mm, or 100 mm in diameter or square edge length, and suitable thicknesses can be about 100 μm to 1000 μm. The large area substrates have a high degree of crystallographic alignment. The large area substrates can be used in a variety of electronics and/or optics applications. Methods of forming the large area substrates generally include lateral and vertical growth of SCD on spaced apart and crystallographically aligned SCD seed substrates, with the individual SCD growth layers eventually merging to form a composite SCD layer of high quality and high crystallographic alignment. A diamond substrate holder can be used to crystallographically align the SCD seed substrates and reduce the effect of thermal stress on the formed SCD layers.

摘要: The disclosure relates to epoxidized lignin prepolymers, related methods of making the prepolymers, cured epoxy resins formed from the prepolymers, articles including a coating of the cured epoxy resins, and related curing methods and compositions. The epoxidized lignin prepolymer has an epoxide functionality in a range of 2 to 8 and a high solubility in various common organic solvents. The high solubility permits incorporation of the epoxidized lignin prepolymer into an epoxy system which cures after addition of curing agents at high enough concentrations to allow replacement of conventional epoxide prepolymers at levels up to 100% replacement. Using other biobased materials in addition to lignin, for example biobased epichlorohydrin to epoxidize the lignin and a biobased hardener to cure the prepolymer, can provide a corresponding cured epoxy resin that is formed from completely biobased materials.

摘要: A reflector apparatus is provided. A further aspect employs at least one antenna or radar operably emitting signals, and a moving object-mounted reflector which operably reflects at least some of the signals back to the at least one antenna or radar, the reflector including trihedral walls with metallic reflective surfaces. In another aspect, a programmable controller in an automotive vehicle determines a moving object-characteristic based on at least reflected signals received by a horn antenna using a Doppler or micro-Doppler effect. Still another aspect includes a trihedral reflector which moves with a movable object including handlebars, a straddled user seat and being one of: a bicycle, a motorcycle, or an all-terrain vehicle. A further aspect includes multiple spaced apart trihedral reflectors attached to a user-wearable, flexible and nonconductive substrate.

摘要: A method of charging and/or discharging energy in reusable fuel workpieces or particles includes a solar furnace with counter-flowing workpieces and gas, to exchange heat therebetween, with the exiting gas and workpieces being at about ambient temperature. A further aspect employs a production plant including a reduction reactor configured to use excess electrical energy generated by renewable power generators to charge and/or discharge solid-state thermochemical fuel. Another aspect includes a fuel flow control valve using air pulses. An oxygen-deprived and reusable fuel, such as magnesium manganese oxide, or magnesium iron oxide, is also provided. In another aspect, an apparatus for producing a solid-state fuel includes a reduction reactor including a reactor chamber configured to receive concentrated solar energy, and a reactor tube having a recuperation zone, a reduction zone, and a quenching zone, wherein the reduction zone passes through the reactor chamber. A discharged solid-state fuel is configured to be fed down the reactor tube and a low-oxygen gas is configured to flow up the reactor tube.

摘要: The disclosure relates to adhesive compositions, including non-crosslinked resins and crosslinked/cured adhesives joining substrates, as well as related methods for making the compositions and articles. Compared to a conventional phenol (P) and formaldehyde (F) resin, the disclosed methods and compositions use lignin (L), formaldehyde (F), and optionally higher aldehydes (A) as corresponding replacements to provide an analog to a conventional PF resin with biobased reactants. Due to the differing reactivity of the LF components compared to the PF components, the initial condensation reaction between ortho-reactive sites in the lignin and the aldehyde is controlled to prevent gelation of the aqueous reaction mixture while reacting substantially all of the LF reactants to provide a non-crosslinked resin reaction product. The resin reaction product can then be cured at high temperature/high pressure conditions to provide a crosslinked adhesive, for example joining two substrates.

摘要: The disclosure generally relates to a method of creating patterned metallic circuits (e.g., silver circuits) on a substrate (e.g., a ceramic substrate). A porous metal interlayer (e.g., porous nickel) is applied to the substrate to improve wetting and adhesion of the patterned metal circuit material to the substrate. The substrate is heated to a temperature sufficient to melt the patterned metal circuit material but not the porous metal interlayer. Spreading of molten metal circuit material on the substrate is controlled by the porous metal interlayer, which can itself be patterned, such as having a defined circuit pattern. Thick-film silver or other metal circuits can be custom designed in complicated shapes for high temperature/high power applications. The materials designated for the circuit design allows for a low-cost method of generating silver circuits other metal circuits on a ceramic substrate.

摘要: The disclosure relates to a method for chemically recycling a condensation polymer, which includes melt-processing a mixture including a condensation polymer and an internal catalyst to increase the amorphous content of the polymer, followed by depolymerizing polymer in a reaction medium with a reactive solvent. Melt-processing and quenching of a condensation polymer generally reduces the crystalline content of the polymer and correspondingly increases the amorphous content of the polymer, which makes the polymer more amenable to subsequent depolymerization. Inclusion of the internal catalyst, for example a volatile organic catalyst, during melt-processing not only improves the relative degree of amorphization during melt-processing, but it also enhances the rate and conversion of the depolymerization stage that would otherwise be rate-limited by mass transport of an external catalyst from the bulk reaction medium to the polymer surface for depolymerization.
