A catalyst for effectively removing NOx by using NH3 as a reducing agent is disclosed. Particularly, a vanadia impregnated onto Ti-PILC (titania-pillared interlayer clay) is disclosed, which is prepared by the generally known technology. More specifically, a V2O5/Ti-PILC catalyst is disclosed, in which NOx contained in the flue gas from an electric power plant and the like (an excessive amount of SO2 being present in the flue gas stream) is reacted with NH3 (which is injected as a reducing agent) over a vanadia impregnated onto a Ti-PILC, so that they can be converted into harmless nitrogen and water. The V2O5/Ti-PILC catalyst is employed for reducing NOx contained in the exhaust gas stream as well as the large amounts of SO2 into nitrogen and water. The catalyst is prepared by pillaring a titania to a clay by a pillaring method. The V2O5/Ti-PILC catalyst prepared in the present invention reveals a superior NO removal activity under dry and wet conditions compared with the commercial V2O5—WO3/TiO2 catalyst.

A method of performing quantitative analysis of nitrogen oxides occluded in heterogeneous catalysts, comprising the following steps, each performed in parallel for multiple samples: adsorption of nitrogen oxides by multiple samples using a batch adsorption apparatus, extraction of nitrogen oxides from the occluded samples using a solvent, reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrite ions contained in the extract using hydrazine, and detection and quantification of nitrogen oxides by colorization using a modified Griess reagent. The method of the invention requires less time and expense as compared to the conventional method, wherein the process of serial adsorption, purge, desorption, and quantification is performed repeatedly to quantify the amount of nitrogen oxides adsorbed onto multiple samples. This method enables the efficient and reliable evaluation of nitrogen oxide adsorbing catalysts, which are commonly employed in automobiles for post-treatment of exhaust gases.

The catalyst prepared according to the present invention has excellent hydrothermal stability and an activity of the catalyst remains for a long time. Further, by using this catalyst to remove nitrogen oxides in an exhaust gas, a removal ratio of the nitrogen oxides is greatly enhanced.

Disclosed are a catalyst for removing NOx from flue gas and its preparation. The catalyst comprises vanadium pentoxide, and barium oxide or calcium oxide as active components on a titanium dioxide support and is prepared by uniformly dispersing the metal oxides on the surface of the titanium dioxide support. This support is prepared by sufficiently drying and calcining a metatitanate (TiO(OH)2)-predominating slurry which is obtained from the course of the production of titanium dioxide for pigment from ilmenite. The catalyst exbihits excellent NOx removal activity as well as high durability against SO2, so that it can remove NOx for relatively longer period of time without being deteriorated by the poisoning induced by SO2 and significantly contribute to the prevention of plugging and corrosion of the downstream of a SCR reactor system.
