Abstract:
There is described method and apparatus for processing signals of a telephonic communication, where the signals represent sensitive and non-sensitive information. A described method comprises processing the signals to provide a first version of the signals that is to be recorded and a second version of the signals that is to be output as audio; monitoring at least the first version of the signals to detect, in said at least the first version of the signals, one or more instances of one or more predetermined characteristics that represent the sensitive information conveyed by the signals; and modifying said at least the first version of the signals by removing the identified predetermined characteristics from said at least the first version of the signals.
Abstract:
Dual mounting head scanners measure the thickness of flexible moving porous webs and employ an air clamp on the operative surface of the lower head to maintain the web in physical contact with a measurement surface. As the web is held firmly by the clamp, the vacuum level that is established is indicative of the porosity of the membrane. As compressed air is supplied to a vacuum generator at a given operational pressure, the rate of airflow through the web can be inferred from the vacuum pressure measurements. The rate of airflow through the membrane and therefore the porosity of the membrane are related to the vacuum level. It is not necessary to measure the airflow through the membrane. From the vacuum pressure measurements, the membrane's permeability can also be determined by correlation to empirical data. Thickness measurements are effected by optical triangulation and inductive proximity measurements.
Abstract:
An exemplary method for controlling torque at one or more wheels of a vehicle, including controlling both positive torque (acceleration) and negative torque (braking) with a single torque command. According to one embodiment, the method interprets the acceleration and braking intent of the driver, takes into consideration certain special conditions (e.g., vehicle dynamic conditions like wheel slip, over- and under-steer, etc.), and generates one or more individual torque commands that are sent to individual wheels or corners of the vehicle. The individual torque commands may address certain chassis and powertrain functions like acceleration and braking, and may provide full-feature torque control (i.e., acceleration, braking, vehicle dynamics, etc.) on an individual wheel basis. It is also possible for the method to be used in a system where a number of the common chassis, powertrain and/or vehicle dynamic modules have been integrated into a single torque control module or the like.
Abstract:
An apparatus for incorporation into time-domain spectroscopy systems that creates a continuous reference whereby a sample pulses' phase and amplitude can be tracked and corrected employs a beam splitter to generate sample and reference pulses. A detector is positioned for receiving the reference radiation pulses that do not interact with the sample. The same detector is also positioned for receiving the sample radiation pulses that emerge from the sample. The apparatus can be readily implemented by being configured between the emitter and detector of a terahertz time-domain spectrometer. The reference pulse is used to trace the changes in time and amplitude of the sample pulse. Since any changes in the reference pulse will most likely manifest in the sample pulse, the reference pulse is monitored and used to correct the sample pulse and thereby reduce the effects of jitter.
Abstract:
Mechanical actuation of valves in flexible fluidic structures allows for the regulation of fluid flow. In accordance with the disclosure herein, a fluidic structure is provided wherein mechanical actuation is conferred using a pin to actuate a flexible layer to occlude fluid flow in a fluid channel.
Abstract:
A method by which silicon nanostructures may be selectively coated with molecules or biomolecules using an electrochemical process. This chemical process may be employed as a method for coating many different nanostructures within a circuit, each with a different molecular or biomolecular material. The density of devices within a circuit of devices that can be coated with different molecules is limited only by the ability to electronically address each device separately. This invention has applications toward the fabrication of molecular electronic circuitry and toward the fabrication of nanoelectronic molecular sensor arrays.
Abstract:
A method of operating a vehicle comprising an adaptive cruise control system and an engine control module is provided. The engine control module is coupled to the adaptive cruise control system. The method comprises issuing a speed reduction signal from the adaptive cruise control system, verifying a speed reduction with a first sensor using the adaptive cruise control system, verifying the speed reduction with a second sensor using the engine control module, thereafter, receiving a resume signal from an operator input device, and executing a speed increase of the vehicle with the engine control module in response to receiving the resume signal with the engine control module.
Abstract:
Dual mounting head scanner system measures the thickness of a flexible continuous moving web such as paper by employing an optical senor positioned in the upper head to determine the distance between the optical sensor and the upper surface of the paper while a displacement sensor positioned in the lower head determines the distance between the displacement sensor, which includes an RF coil, and a reference surface on the upper head. An air clamp and vacuum source assembly on the operative surface of the lower head maintains the moving web in physical contact with a measurement surface that is incorporated in the operative surface. The optical sensor directs incident radiation onto the web at the measurement surface. Thermal isolation of the two sensors eliminates thermal interactions.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for controlling braking in a vehicle are provided, for example in a vehicle in which regenerative braking is provided using a motor capable of providing regenerative braking on one axle or wheel that does not have a friction brake component. If it is determined that the energy storage system of the vehicle cannot accept additional electrical energy created by the regenerative braking, the electrical energy is transferred to another location such as a motor on another axle or wheel, resulting in a propulsion torque on that axle. In order to maintain the total desired braking consistent with the driver command, friction braking is provided on the axle the regenerative braking energy is transferred to using a friction braking component, based in part upon the amount of propulsion torque, when the energy storage system cannot accept additional electrical energy.
