Abstract:
A fuel primer pressure accumulator for an internal combustion engine fuel supply system capable of storing fuel under pressure when the internal combustion engine is stopped. The accumulator has a chamber formed by a casing and a pressure element. The accumulator is connected at a fuel inlet passage to the fuel supply line between the fuel pump and the carburetor. The accumulator is connected at a fuel outlet passage to a primer valve and through the primer valve to at least one fuel primer. A check valve is contained in the fuel inlet passage. The check valve permits the passage of fuel into the chamber when the internal combustion engine is running and restricts the passage of fuel out of the chamber when the internal combustion engine is stopped, thereby trapping fuel in the chamber.

Disclosed herein is a marine propulsion water pump including a casing defining a water passage including an inlet, an outlet, and an intermediate portion between the inlet and the outlet, a first impeller located in the intermediate portion of the casing, a second impeller located in the intermediate portion of the casing and rearwardly of the first impeller, a first shaft drivingly connected to the first impeller, extending forwardly therefrom, and having a hollow interior, a second shaft drivingly connected to the second impeller, extending in the hollow interior of the first shaft and forwardly therefrom, and gearing for counter-rotating the first and second shafts.

An engine operative between a low speed, a high speed, and an intermediate speed between the low and high speeds comprises a combustion chamber and a throttle operatively connected to the engine for controlling operation of the engine between the low, intermediate, and high speeds. The engine further includes a source of fuel and a fuel delivery system communicating with the fuel source and the combustion chamber for introducing fuel into the combustion chamber in response to the throttle. The fuel delivery system comprises a first fuel metering assembly for discharging fuel into the combustion chamber when the engine is being operated at the low speed, a second fuel metering assembly independent of the first fuel metering assembly for discharging fuel into the combustion chamber when the engine is being operated at the intermediate and high speeds, and a third fuel metering assembly independent of the first and second metering assemblies for discharging into the combustion chamber fuel in addition to the fuel discharged by the second fuel metering assembly when the engine is being operated at the high speed.

Disclosed is a method for reducing electrostatic deposition of charged particles on wetted surfaces that are exposed, periodically or substantially continuously to high velocity fluid flow within a coolant flow path in a nuclear reactor. The method includes depositing a first or base dielectric layer and a second or outer dielectric layer on a conductive surface that forms a portion of a high velocity flow path. The first dielectric layer material is selected to provide improved adhesion and insulation to the conductive surface and the second dielectric layer material is selected to provide suitable adhesion to the first dielectric layer and improved corrosion and/or mechanical resistance in the anticipated operating environment.

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) can be advantageously employed to uniformly coat or impregnate an array or preform of fibers with a ceramic material. As a result, more efficient methods for making composite materials of superior quality are provided. The method of this invention comprises the steps of: (a) providing an array of reinforcing fibers which array has electrically conducting characteristics; (b) disposing the array in a liquid ceramic polymer sol in juxtaposition to a surface of a first electrode, the sol including molecules having an electrical charge; (c) providing a second electrode in contact with the sol and spaced from the first electrode; (d) creating an electric field in the polymeric sol by applying voltage to the electrodes so that the molecules migrate toward the surface of the first electrode where the migrating molecules aggregate against the fiber array, thereby producing a polymer-coated fiber array; (e) removing the polymer-coated fiber array from the sol; and (f) heat treating the polymer-coated fiber array to convert the polymer sol to a ceramic material, thereby providing a ceramic coating on the fiber array. The ceramic-coated fiber array can be used to fabricate a fiber-reinforced composite material by the additional steps of: (g) combining the ceramic-coated array with a second ceramic matrix powder to provide a composite pre-form structure; and (h) consolidating the composite pre-form structure by subjecting same to heat under conditions which consolidate the ceramic-coated fiber with the second ceramic matrix powder and thereby form a dense fiber-reinforced composite material.

A method for casting a housing and insert assembly including a housing and a cast-in-place insert. The casting method comprises the steps of providing a prefabricated insert, surrounding the insert with an evaporable foam pattern to form a pattern and insert assembly, and utilizing the pattern and insert assembly in a lost foam casting process wherein the pattern is replaced by a material to form the housing and insert assembly.

A carburetor comprises an air induction passage and a choke valve movable in the air induction passage. The carburetor also includes a fuel chamber and a fuel inlet valve which controls the introduction of fuel into the chamber. A control rod is operative for movement axially along and rotationally about its longitudinal axis. The control rod is operatively linked with both the choke valve and the fuel inlet valve such that movement of the control rod in one of its axial and rotational directions operates the choke valve and movement of the control rod in the other one of the axial and rotational directions operates the fuel inlet valve.

Disclosed herein is a marine propulsion device including an internal combustion engine having a water jacket with an inlet portion, a second portion, and a valve port communicating between the inlet portion and the second portion, a valve member movable relative to the valve port between open and closed positions, a recess extending from the inlet portion, a movable wall connected to the valve member for actuation thereof between the open and closed positions, which movable wall has opposite first and second sides and extends across the recess to define, on the first side thereof, a chamber located in the recess, and being subject, on the second side thereof, to the pressure of the water in the inlet portion, a water pump driven by the engine, having a discharge outlet, and communicating with the water during normal operation, a water supply conduit communicating with the discharge outlet and with the water jacket inlet portion, and including an overboard discharge branch conduit communicating with the atmosphere, a duct communicating with the chamber and with the overboard discharge branch conduit, and a valve in the overboard discharge branch conduit downstream of the connection with the duct and operable selectively to open and close the overboard discharge branch conduit relative to the atmosphere.
