Abstract:
The present application provides fibers made from recombinant hagfish intermediate filament proteins. Methods of expressing and purifying the proteins, and methods of creating the fibers, are likewise disclosed. The method of purifying protein yields larger quantities of hagfish protein than have been previously achieved, and the fibers have the highest mechanical properties yet recorded for recombinant hagfish protein fibers.
Abstract:
Medical devices made with coatings made from recombinant spider silk proteins are disclosed. Methods to make the devices are also disclosed. Methods for adhering objects to one another using recombinant spider silk proteins are also disclosed.
Abstract:
A hybrid vector produced from a linearized cosmid and arms from .lambda. phage vector DNA has been developed. The hybrid vector can be used to generate fragments which are useful as vectors in a helper phage-mediated transformation system, permitting large fragments of foreign DNA to be introduced into a host on an industrial scale.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to the fields of molecular biology and plant biology. Specifically, the invention is directed to the methods for expressing spider silk proteins in plants and the synthesis and purification of spider silk proteins therefrom.
Abstract:
Spider silk protein encoding nucleic acids, polypeptides and antibodies immunologically specific therefore are disclosed. Methods of use thereof are also provided.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to isolated cDNA which codes for spider silk protein or a fragment or variant thereof, a replicable vector containing cDNA which codes for spider silk protein and which is capable of expressing spider silk protein, a transformed cell or microorganism containing cDNA which codes for spider silk protein or a fragment thereof which is capable of expressing spider silk protein and products, such as fibers, which may be manufactured utilizing the recombinant protein of the present invention.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatuses for preparing protein fibers (biofilaments) from recombinant biofilament proteins are disclosed. The methods are particularly useful for spinning fibers of spider silk or silkworm silk proteins from recombinant sources and may be used to spin such fibers for use in the manufacture of industrial and commercial products.
Abstract:
Methods for forming useful films using recombinant spider silk protein are discussed. In one embodiment, the method involves dissolving silk protein in a sufficient quantity to form a film suspended in a solvent. The solution is then mixed with a compound selected from water, acids, imidazole crosslinking agents, antibiotics, nanoparticles, surfactants and combinations thereof. Solubilisation of the protein in the solution is effected by microwave exposure. Once solubilized the microwave treated solution is poured onto a suitable substrate and dried in order to result in the final film, the protein may be plant, mammal or bacterially derived. The film has widespread use and can be combined with any one of a number of substrates, examples of which include: a cosmetic composition; a pharmaceutical or medical composition, drug delivery system, artificial cell, contact lens coating, sustained-release drug delivery system, artificial skin graft; food composition; automotive part; aeronautic component; computer or data storage device, building material, textile, filter material, membrane material, nanomaterial, electronic component and combinations thereof.
