The invention describes a process for the preparation of (S,S)-N,N′-ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid or analogous compounds or their salts by reaction of L-aspartic acid, L-glutamic acid or L-cysteic acid with 1,2-bissulfooxyethane, 1,3,2-dioxathiolane 2,2-dioxide or mixtures thereof or 1,3-bissulfooxy-2-hydroxypropane in the presence of a base, and optional subsequent acidification with an acid. Also described is a process for the preparation of (S,S)-N,N′-ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid or analogous compounds or their salts by reaction of N-(2-sulfooxyethyl)-L-aspartic acid or its salts with L-aspartic acid or corresponding compounds based on L-glutamic acid, L-cysteic acid and/or 1,3-bissulfooxy-2-hydroxypropane in the presence of a base, and optional subsequent acidification with an acid.

In a process for preparing an alkoxylated amide of the formula (I)R.sup.1 --CO--NR.sup.2 --CHR.sup.3 --CHR.sup.4 --O--(CHR.sup.5 --CHR.sup.6 --O).sub.n --H (I)(1) glycerides of the fatty acids, specified later on, of the formula (II):R.sup.1 --COOH (II)are reached with amines of the formula (III)HNR.sup.2 R.sup.7 (III)to give amides of the formula (IV)R.sup.1 --CO--NR.sup.2 --R.sup.7 (IV)and glycerol,(2) then the glycerol which has been formed is separated off by adding of aqueous acid solution to the reaction mixture until it has a pH in the range 1-7, in order to bring about phase separation into a glycerol-containing aqueous phase and an organic phase containing amides of the formula (IV), and separating off the aqueous phase, and(3) subsequently the amide of the formula (IV) is reacted with ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide to give alkoxylated amides of the formula (I).

The present invention relates to a process for preparing aminopolycarboxylates proceeding from an amino acid which, in a first process step is reacted with ethylene oxide to give an intermediate mixture comprising the corresponding dialkanolamine, and then the intermediate mixture, in a second process step is converted catalytically using a base to the corresponding aminopolycarboxylate, wherein the amino acid, before the reaction with ethylene oxide in the first process step, is supplied to a partial neutralization with 0.70 to 0.99 equivalent of base per acid group, or, in the first process step, an amino acid which has already been partly neutralized with 0.70 to 0.99 equivalent of base per acid group is used.
