This invention relates to impregnant compositions for porous substrates prepared from dicyclopentenyl and dicyclopentenyloxy (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl acrylates and methacrylates and which include at least about 4% by weight of the impregnant composition of a component selected from the drying oil fatty acids and mixtures thereof. Cementitious surfaces impregnated with and sealed using these compositions exhibit improved water and crack resistance.

A coating composition is used for coating or overlaying Portland cement concrete or metal. The composition includes a synthetic polymer latex having ureido functional groups, an amine-functional epoxy curing agent, a liquid epoxy resin, and a hydraulic cement. The coating composition has superior thermal shock resistance and low cost in comparison with epoxy/amine-type polymer concrete, and excellent strength development and chemical resistance in comparison with conventional latex-based cementitious compositions. The coating composition can be mixed from a pair of storage-stable components; a dry mix including the hydraulic cement and the epoxy resin, and optionally larger size aggregate, and a wet mix including the polymer latex and the amine curing agent. The two components can be mixed on site to give a fluid coating composition having a good pot life and low viscosity, which rapidly develops strength, and ultimately develops high compressive strength, thermal shock resistance, and resistance to chemical attack, especially attack by aqueous acids.

An aqueous, radiation-curable, functionalized latex polymer composition and its preparation are disclosed. The composition is a multistaged latex polymer formed from a first stage polymer and a second stage polymer having .alpha., .beta.-unsaturated carbonyl functionalization which permits curing by UV radiation. The composition dries tack-free before curing. The final cured UV coating has excellent solvent resistance, water resistance, stain resistance, direct impact resistance and hot print resistance. The composition is useful in coatings, adhesives, inks and leather coatings, and is particularly useful as a coating on wood. The multistaged latex polymer is made by(a) forming a multistage polymer having(1) a first stage polymer; and(2) a second stage polymer comprising at least one comonomer containing acid functionality;(b) partially neutralizing said acid functionality of said second stage polymer of said multistage polymer with a base; and(c) reacting said multistage polymer having partially neutralized acid functionality with a monoethylenically unsaturated epoxide compound.

This invention relates to vinyl monomer compositions exhibiting accelerated surface cure characteristics. These compositions are prepared from a vinyl monomer or monomer mixtures such as a blend of dicyclopentenyloxyethyl methacrylate and hydroxypropyl methacrylate, a bulk phase polymerization catalyst system, a polyvalent metal oxidative surface phase catalyst, and a diolefin rubber dispersed in the vinyl monomer as a surface cure accelerator. These compositions are useful as binders for polymer concrete and as impregnants for porous surfaces. The accelerated surface cure is particularly advantageous with monomer mixtures containing low volatility vinyl monomers.
