The invention relates to epoxy adhesives. An epoxy adhesive is provided that simultaneously has low E-modulus and high glass temperature. Such adhesives are useful in the manufacture of large machinery (e.g., automobiles), and are useful for bonding different materials, such as metal and carbon fiber composite. The cured epoxy adhesive can be formulated to have an E-modulus of less than 1000 MPa, and a glass transition temperature of at least 80 C. The epoxy adhesive comprises a capped polyurethane pre polymer, a core shell rubber, and polyetheramine-epoxy adduct.

The invention is an adhesive composition comprising: a) an isocyanate functional polyether base prepolymers having a z molecular weight average (Mz) of about 10,000 to about 80,000 g/mole; a carbon black having an average oil absorption number of at least about 80 to at most about 400 cubic centimeters of dibutyl phthalate per 100 grams of the carbon black; (c) reactive silicon in an amount from about 0.001% to about 10% by weight of the adhesive composition; and (d) one or more catalysts for the reaction of isocyanate with hydroxyl groups. The adhesive compositions of the invention surprisingly may have improved sag performance (i.e., decreased sag) when heated, while also making them more easily pumped.

The first part may further comprises one or more compounds capable of free radical polymerization. This facilitates formulating compositions that have commercially desirable volumetric ratios of the two parts. Adhesive compositions of the present formulation provide excellent adhesion to low surface energy substrates, such as plastics.

A method to join pipe is disclosed using a curable one or two part adhesive composition comprising an effective amount of a boron containing initiator compound such as an organoborate, a stabilized organoborane complex, or combinations thereof; one or more monomers, oligomers, polymers or mixtures thereof having olefinic unsaturation which is capable of polymerization by free radical polymerization; and optionally a decomplexing agent. An especially preferred organoborane is one where a tertiary or quaternary nitrogen atom is bonded to the organoborane to prepare an amido-borate. In those embodiments where the nitrogen is quaternary, the quaternary nitrogen portion of the amido-borate is the cationic counter ion for the borate anion portion of the compound to which the quaternary nitrogen atom is bonded.

The present invention is a laminate comprising a first substrate adhesively bonded to a second substrate through an adhesion promoter. The first substrate comprises a substantially linear olefin copolymer and the adhesion promoter comprises a polar group functionalized substantially linear olefin copolymer. The present invention is also an adhesion promoter that comprises a mixture of a copolymer of a C.sub.2-20 olefin and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or acid anhydride and a polar group functionalized substantially linear olefin copolymer or a polar group functionalized copolymer of ethylene and a C.sub.3-20 olefin having a narrow molecular weight distribution, a random distribution of comonomer units along the polymer backbone, and a homogeneity index of at least 75. The present invention is useful in a variety of applications such as bathroom scales, shoe soles, carpet-backing, and automobile windshields.
