An improved process for the production of a substantially equimolecular copolymer of maleic acid anhydride and diisobutylene in which from 10 to 100 mole % of the anhydride groups are esterified with linear or branched aliphatic monoalcohols containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms or with cycloaliphatic monoalcohols containing from 5 to 6 carbon atoms to form the corresponding semiesters, wherein shortly before or after the end of the solution or suspension copolymerization of maleic acid anhydride and diisobutylene a monomer corresponding to the general formula ##STR1## in which R=H, CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5, --OR.sub.2, --O--CO--CH.sub.3, ##STR2## --CH.sub.2 OH, --CH.sub.2 O--C--CH.sub.3, R.sub.1 =H , CH.sub.3 andR.sub.2 =a linear or branched alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms,Or mixtures of these monomers with one another are added to the polymerization mixture in quantities of from 1 to 12 mole %, based on the maleic acid anhydride used. The aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic alkali, amine or ammonium salt solutions of the semiesters of the copolymer are highly effective as anionic sizing agents for paper.

An improved process for the production of powders of maleic acid anhydride/1-olefin copolymers by suspension polymerization in the presence of special dispersion agents which are obtained by the reaction of a copolymer of maleic acid anhydride and a 1-olefin with an aliphatic monohydric alcohol or an aliphatic monoamine or a mixture thereof, at least 30 mol % of the anhydride groups being esterified to semi-esters or amidated to semi-amides. The copolymer powders obtained have a surprisingly narrowparticle size distribution and can be used without grinding or sifting as reactive fillers for natural and synthetic rubbers. They also can be used for the production of paper coating agents as they dissolve easily and without residue in alkalis, ammonia or amines.

The new copolymers based on maleic anhydride and .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compounds contain, as bivalent structural units,A: 20 to 95 mole % of the structural element ##STR1## B: 0 to 40 mole % of the structural element ##STR2## C: and 0 to 40 mole % of the structural element ##STR3## the sum of the mole percents of (A), (B) and (C) being 100, and wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are identical or different and denote hydrogen, alkyl, optionally substituted aryl or the ester group ##STR4## in which R.sup.4 represents alkyl with 1 to 20 carbon atoms,R.sup.3 denotes an alkyl, cycloalkyl or optionally substituted aryl radical with 1 to 20 carbon atoms andX and Y are identical or different and represent the group--O--R.sup.5in whichR.sup.5 denotes hydrogen, a cation or alkyl with 1 to 40 carbon atoms, orX and Y represent the group--NHR.sup.3in which R.sup.3 has the abovementioned meaning,at least one of the radicals X and Y representing the group --O--R.sup.5, and at least one of the radicals in the radicals X and Y containing at least 18 carbon atoms.The new copolymers can be prepared by reacting alternating copolymers of maleic anhydride and .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compounds with monoalcohols and monoamines.
