A charging pressure feedback signal P.sub.La is fed to a regulating device (40) which receives various operating parameters, including ME.sub.d which represents the power output. A characteristic field in a memory zone (50) in the regulating device (40) determines a control variable (TV) which operates a turbine by-pass valve (22) via an electro-pneumatic converter (28) and a penumatic (vacuum) actuator (26). The characteristic field is such that the charging presssure P.sub.La is reduced in the part load range (cruising speed) to improve fuel consumption.

The jolt damping circuit includes a guide regulator, a device for generating a jolt disturbance signal in dependency on the rotary speed of the engine, and means for combining the output signal from the guide generator and from the jolt disturbance signal generator to produce a desired value setting signal applicable to regulating means for the setting member of a fuel injection pump. The jolt damping circuit is directly connectable into a standard fuel metering system of a motor vehicle.

A method and apparatus for improving the acceleration behavior of a self-igniting internal combustion engine driven with an exhaust turbocharger by displacing the onset of injection during the acceleration phase toward "early", and a combustion chamber pressure is attained, which at least in part compensates for reduction in engine power caused by sluggishness of the turbocharger and a resultant smaller cylinder charge. Further increase in power is attained by means of an increase in the fuel component made possible by the adjustment of injection onset without exceeding the smoke limit of combustion. Apparatus are furthermore proposed for performing the method according to the invention, in which with the aid of an acceleration signal obtained by hydraulic or electric elements an adjustment toward "early" is effected in a hydraulically functioning injection adjustment device.

A fuel metering control loop which includes an exhaust gas sensor and an integrating controller. In order to operate the system at an air number which may differ from the most stable operating point of the oxygen sensor, the output signal from the controller is deliberately changed so as to override the command signals from the oxygen sensor. In particular, the output signal undergoes a step-change toward a higher or lower value at the times of reversal of sensor potential. Thus, the average value of the air number which the controller effectively maintains is different from the nominal value which would be obtained with direct sensor control. In another embodiment, the ongoing integration process is continued for some time beyond the sensor signal reversal.

In order to damp jerking movements resulting at different power transmissions, a signal corresponding to the actual rotary speed of the engine is fed back into an electronic regulating circuit. Preferably, the feedback path includes a phase shifter. It is essential that the regulating action of the rotary speed be not delayed by the phase turning shifter. For this purpose, the electronic regulating circuit includes a PI stage and the fed back signal is applied to the regulating circuit only after its I-constituent has become effective.

A control system for the fuel injection mechanism of an internal combustion engine, especially a Diesel engine. In order to adapt the fuel admitted to the engine to exact requirements, a correction is made on the basis of air mass flow rate and fuel temperature. The air mass flow rate is deduced from signals generated by an air temperature sensor and an air pressure sensor while the fuel temperature is taken by a fuel temperature sensor. The two temperature signals are applied to a bridge circuit which feeds a differential amplifier whose output is mixed with the pressure signal. The composite mixed signal is applied to a servo-mechanism to limit the excursion of the fuel control rack of the fuel injection pump. Status indicators generate feedback signals for comparison with set-point signals to provide closed-loop control.
