The polarizer of the present invention is composed of mediums having different refractive indices, by which ordinary light in incidented light is wholly reflected at a boundary between laminated medium I and medium II and extraordinary light is transmitted through the medium II. The medium II is so arranged as to be almost 45.degree. to the light axis, and thickness of the medium II is selected as a value with which the medium II works as a half wave length plate to the transmitting light. The polarizer, which has high transparency by reduction of absorption and is able to make most of incident light be similarly polarized light, is obtained. A polarizer for and apparatus for bright liquid crystal display, which is able to be enlarged to a large size display without light absorption, can be provided.

The object of the invention is to provide a drive method suitable for driving a fast-responding STN liquid crystal display device which ensures a minimized cross talk and improved contrast in display. The drive method comprises a memory means for storing display data corresponding to a plurality of lines, a function generating means for generating a drive function for the row electrodes, an arithmetic means for computing the outputs from the foregoing means, a column electrode drive means for driving the column electrodes in dependency on the output from the arithmetic means, and a row electrode drive means for driving the row electrodes in accordance with respective row electrode drive functions. As a voltage function to be applied to each row during drive operation, a sum of a plurality of orthogonal functions is utilized. Thereby, degradation in contrast due to display patterns as well as the cross talk can be minimized. Further, arithmetic operation can be simplified in gradation display since application of a compensating voltage waveform is no more required.

There is provided a resinous optical transmitting element in which a core, through which light is transmitted, is formed into a predetermined non-linear configuration, and a cladding lower in refractive index than the core is in close contact with the core. A method of manufacturing the optical transmitting element comprises the steps of polymerizing polymeric material forming the core, within a mold having a predetermined non-linear cavity, subsequently removing the mold, and forming the cladding about the core. The resinous optical transmitting element obtained by the method can be formed into a selected one of various configurations in compliance with the purpose. In addition, the resinous optical transmitting element is less in distortion, making it possible to reduce the transmission loss.
