摘要: A system and method for determining the magnitude of linear and rotational acceleration of and direction of impact to a body part, such as a head includes positioning a number of single-axis accelerometers proximate to the outer surface of the body part. A number of accelerometers are oriented to sense respective linear acceleration orthogonal to the outer surface of the body part. The acceleration data sensed is collected and recorded. A hit profile function is determined from the configuration of the body part and the positioning of the plurality of accelerometers thereabout. A number of potential hit results are generated from the hit profile function and then compared to the acceleration data sensed by the accelerometers. One of the potential hit results is best fit matched to the acceleration data to determine a best fit hit result, which yields the magnitude of linear acceleration to and direction of an impact to the body part. The rotational acceleration of the body part can also be estimated from the magnitude of linear acceleration of and direction of the impact to the body part.

摘要: The invention relates to a system for monitoring a physiological parameter of players engaged in a sports activity. The invention further relates to a method for evaluating and treating players when the parameter exceeds a predetermined level. The system measures, calculates and records the parameter and then alerts trained personnel to apply the method to evaluate and treat players. When the system is configured for use with football, hockey or lacrosse, the system generally includes reporting units, a sideline controller, a database, and a signaling device, such as a wireless personal digital assistant. The physiological parameter data measured and collected by the reporting units are processed by the sideline controller for meaningful analysis or use. When the physiological parameter(s) exceeds a predetermined threshold level the sideline controller generates an alert that is received by the signaling device, which is typically worn by sideline personnel, such as coaching staff or trainers. After an alert occurs, the method for evaluating and treating a player is initiated. The signaling device includes software that prompts the sideline personnel to perform the method through a series of interactive steps and tests. The signaling device prompts the personnel to conduct the appropriate sideline examination, records the responses, compares the results to established baselines and prompts further testing, a return to play decision, or a no-play decision.

摘要: The invention is generally directed to the novel and unique modular implant that provides an improved surface for interfacing with an external prosthesis. The implant includes a stem, an optional extension member connected to the stem, a prosthetic condyle, or in the case of application to other levels of cut bone amputations, a location-specific terminal shape, connected to the extension member. The stem is inserted directly into the canal of the bone and tissue, including muscle, is attached directly to the prosthetic and the stem is inserted directly into the canal of the bone. The simulated anatomically correct condyle better distributes the load of the patient's weight and avoids twisting thereby relieving pain to improve the functional connection between the residual limb and an external prosthesis in all levels of upper and lower extremity amputations. The surgically implanted internal prosthetic simplifies and lowers the cost of rehabilitation and results in an improvement in the function of all existing external prosthetic components and systems.

摘要: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for determining the magnitude of linear and rotational acceleration of an impact to a body part. The apparatus can be used with protective sports equipment, such as a sports helmet, wherein the apparatus includes a battery, a number of accelerometers positioned proximate to the outer surface of the head, and an electronic device with a processor and a transmitter to transmit data received from the accelerometers. To maximize the battery life and minimize power consumption by the electronic device, the apparatus includes a power management system with a sensor assembly. The sensor assembly sends a first signal to the electronic device to initiate operation when the sensor assembly detects the presence of an object within the helmet, and a second signal to the electronic device to cease operation when the sensor assembly detects the absence of the object. The sensor assembly may be a proximity sensor, more specifically an inductive, capacitive, or ultrasonic sensor.
