A control system for an automatic transmission, comprising a gear transmission unit for establishing a predetermined gear stage by applying a plurality of frictional engagement elements selectively. The gear transmission unit includes a main transmission portion capable of establishing at least a reverse gear stage, and an auxiliary transmission portion capable of switching a high gear stage and a low gear stage. The auxiliary transmission portion is set to the high stage at the shifting time to the reverse stage. The reverse stage is established by controlling the application of predetermined frictional engagement elements of the main transmission portion when a reverse stage shifting command is generated. A torque-down of an engine is executed at the time of controlling the engagement of the frictional engagement elements for the reverse stage. The auxiliary transmission portion is set to the high stage by controlling the applications of predetermined frictional engagement elements of the auxiliary transmission portion when the reverse stage in the main transmission portion is detected. A signal to end the engine torque-down is sent when a shift of the auxiliary transmission portion to the high stage is detected.

A hydraulic control for an automatic transmission is composed of a gear shift mechanism having first and second frictional engagement elements, a hydraulic control unit for the engagement elements, and an electronic control unit for the hydraulic control unit. The first element is engaged to achieve a first speed stage and the second element is engaged to achieve a second speed stage faster than and closest to the first speed stage. The hydraulic control unit has a first directional control valve for switching the feeding and discharge of hydraulic pressure between the first and second engagement elements, responsive to a first solenoid signal from the electronic control unit. A second directional control valve is adapted to be switched by a second solenoid signal from the electronic control unit to achieve a third speed stage yet faster than the second speed stage. The first engagement element has a discharge line connected to a drain line via the second directional control valve. The electronic control unit has a detector for determination of tie-up of either or both of the engagement elements, whereby upon detection of tie-up by the detector, the second solenoid signal is output to the second directional control valve.

Upon performing a combined shift, a hydraulic control circuit disconnects a hydraulic servomotor and its corresponding accumulator and the pressure in the servomotor is controlled by an electrical signal. When a decision for a second shift is made in the course of the combined shift, the pressure in a hydraulic servomotor for a downshift frictional engagement element is controlled by an electrical signal to return the element to its position before the combined shift while monitoring the number of revolutions of a rotating member in the transmission. As a consequence, a particular speed stage is configured and a shift signal corresponding to the decision of the second shift is outputted to the circuit. Since the shift signal corresponding to the decision of the second shift is not outputted until the particular shift is configured, the servomotor and the accumulator remain disengaged.

A lockup clutch of an automatic transmission is controlled so that no shock is produced while the vehicle is running within a predetermined gear stage. The automatic transmission includes a fluid coupling; a lockup clutch provided in the fluid coupling; a shift selector for selecting a range; a vehicle speed sensor for detecting vehicle speed, and a throttle opening sensor for detecting throttle opening. A control unit determines a gear stage in accordance with the selected range, the vehicle speed and the throttle opening, decides a shift, produces a shifting output signal, decides ON or OFF for the lockup clutch in accordance with the selected range, the vehicle speed and the throttle opening, and produces a lockup ON/OFF output signal. An oil pressure circuit actuates solenoid valves in response to the shifting output signal and the lockup ON/OFF output signal of the control unit. The solenoid valves, in turn, control engagement and release of frictional engagement elements to achieve the decided gear stage and control engagement and release of the lockup clutch. The control unit includes, stored in memory, a lockup diagram set with an ON/OFF hysteresis area; a comparator for deciding whether or not the vehicle speed and the throttle opening, at the time of a shifting output signal is produced, are within the ON/OFF hysteresis area of the lockup diagram; and a lockup output signal generator for turning the lockup output ON if the vehicle speed and the throttle opening are within the ON/OFF hysteresis area when the shifting output signal is produced.
