Endoscopic biopsy forceps jaws having an outer edge which may be generally U-shaped, circular, or oblate circular are disclosed with teeth which extend completely around the outer edge. The teeth may take any of several arrangements. In a first arrangement, the teeth and valleys are formed with two substantially rectangular surfaces which meet at substantially horizontal vertex and nadir lines. In a second arrangement, each tooth has a vertex or peak located upward and inward from the outer edge, and is defined by a substantially triangular inner surface, a substantially quadrilateral base, and a surface which extends outward and downward from the vertex of the triangular surface to the outer edge of the jaw. Valleys between the teeth have two inclined surfaces which intersect along a line which extends inward and downward from the outer edge of the jaw. In a third arrangement, the peak of each tooth is defined by the vertex of a pyramid having four faces and valleys between these teeth have three substantially flat surfaces which intersect at a vertex which lies downward and inward from the outer edge of the jaw. Alternate embodiments of all arrangements include providing a lip around the outer portion of the outer edge so that the teeth and valleys are spaced farther in from the outer surface of the jaw cup.

The screw has a threaded portion dimensioned to engage the distal end of the endoscopic instrument and a head portion with a pair of arm receiving grooves. In a presently preferred embodiment, the washer extends over arms of the end effectors which pass through grooves in the head of the screw. In this manner, the arms of the end effectors are captured between the screw and the washer. A deflection-limiting clevis includes a substantially cylindrical base with a pair of clevis arms extending therefrom, a clevis axle extending between distal ends of the clevis arms and a pair of stops located on interior portions of the clevis arms between the base and the axle. The stops are dimensioned and located to engage respective tangs of a pair of jaws, which are mounted on the axle, when the jaws are deflected across the center line of the clevis. A first embodiment of the clevis may be used with or without a conventional flat needle between the jaws. In a second embodiment of the clevis, a cross member is located between the clevis arms proximal of the clevis axle and distal of the cylindrical base. The cross member may be used to engage the proximal end of a shortened flat needle which is mounted between the jaws and is also used to engage the tangs of the jaws when the jaws are rotated about the axle to a point of deflection. A third embodiment of the invention combines aspects of the first and second embodiments and includes both a pair of stops located on interior portions of the clevis arms between the base and the axle and a cross member located between the stops and the cylindrical base. The third embodiment allows allowing the use of a shortened flat needle while also allowing some deflection of the jaws.

An endoscopic instrument is provided with a hollow tube, first and second end effectors coupled to the hollow tube and having arms biased away from each other, a cylindrical member slidably disposed over the hollow tube, a push/pull wire extending through the tube, a handle assembly coupled to the push/pull wire and the hollow tube, and a disk segment connected to the push/pull wire and connected to the cylindrical member by a crimp in the cylindrical member. When the handle assembly is actuated, the push/pull wire moves the disk segment and hence the cylindrical member relative to the end effectors and causes the cylindrical member to ride over the arms of the end effectors, thereby forcing the end effectors closed or permitting them to open. Preferably, the disk segment has two curved sides which are coupled to the cylindrical member by crimping, and two substantially parallel sides which provide room for the arms of the end effectors so that the disk segment can move relative to the end effectors. The disk segment also includes a central bore for receiving the push/pull wire.

A method for delivering RF energy to living tissue includes the steps of extending a guidewire to a tissue treatment site in a body. A controllable stiffness catheter is provided with a stiffness device having non-metallic properties and a temperature-changing device. The stiffness device is in a stiff state below a given temperature and in a soft state above the given temperature. While supplying power to the temperature-changing device, the catheter is threaded along the guidewire up to the treatment site in the soft state. Power is removed from the temperature-changing device to alter the non-metallic properties of the stiffness device and directly result in a change of the stiffness device to the stiff state without straightening the catheter. The RF energy supply device is physically contacted with the treatment site and RF energy is delivered to the treatment site from the RF energy supply device.
