A thermoplastic resin composition, which comprises (a) from 5 to 85 parts by weight of a melted or remelted preliminary molding compound consisting of from 60 to 98 parts by weight of polyphenylene ethers, 40 to 2 parts by weight of polyoctylenes, from 0.1 to 5 parts by weight of maleic anhydride and from 0.1 to 5 parts by weight of a further acid derivative which has a melting point below 100.degree. C. and which is selected from the group consisting of an unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid having up to 14 carbon atoms, an anhydride thereof, which excludes maleic anhydride, and an ester of mono- or dicarboxylic acid with an alcohol of up to 6 carbon atoms; and (b) from 95 to 15 parts by weight of an aliphatic homopolyamide or a copolyamide containing a preponderant amount of aliphatic monomer units.

Method for preparing and using thermoplastic polyether ester amides with units of the starting components randomly distributed in the polymer chain. A mixture of:I. one or more polyamide forming compounds from the group of the omega-aminocarboxylic acids and/or lactams having at least 10 carbon atoms;II. an alpha, omega-dihydroxy-(polytetrahydrofuran) having an average degree of polymerization of between about 2 and 42 or a molecular weight of between 160 and 3,000; andIII. at least one organic dicarboxylic acid is heated in a weight ratio of I to (II+III) of between 30:7 and 98:2. In (II+III) the hydroxy and carboxy groups are present in equivalent amounts. The heating takes place in the presence of 2-30% by weight of water, based on the polyamide-forming compounds of component I, under the internal pressure attained in a closed container at temperatures of between 230.degree. and 300.degree. C. Water is removed as steam and after removal of the water, the product is further treated at 250.degree.-280.degree. C. with the exclusion of oxygen under normal pressure or under reduced pressure.

Molten PPE containing at least 0.1% volatile components is degasified until it reaches a residual content of volatile components of less than 500 ppm. Subsequently, additional molten polymers and/or additives are added to this molten mass at the lowest possible temperature and both components are mixed.

A plastic pipe having improved resistance to methanol-containing fuels and improved mechanical properties is provided. This is achieved by a multilayer plastic pipe consisting of at least one outer layer based on polyamide and at least one layer of a linear, crystalline polyester modified with isocyanates. With the aid of the invention it is possible to obtain plastic pipes having improved barrier properties against methanol-containing fuels and dimensional stability and mechanical load-bearing capacity.
