摘要: Methods and devices for percutaneous, in situ coronary bypass wherein a tissue puncturing catheter is used to form blood flow paths between an artery and an adjacent vein such that arterial blood will flow through a segment of the adjacent vein, thereby bypassing a lesion in the artery. The tissue puncturing catheter comprises a flexible catheter having a tissue puncturing apparatus such as a sharp tipped member, an electro-surgical apparatus or a laser beam passable therefrom to create the desired blood flow paths between the artery and vein. Stents are provided for facilitating blood flow through the blood flow paths and the segment of the vein used as the bypass conduit. One such stent is specially constructed to carry arterial blood in one direction through the vein segment while allowing venous blood to continue to flow in the opposite direction through that venous segment.

摘要: An apparatus and method of use are disclosed for treating, preventing and terminating arrhythmias. In particular, the apparatus is implantable within or on various tissues and structures and is used to prevent or block conduction of aberrant impulses. A variety of methods of the present invention may be used to attack arrhythmias by short-circuiting impulses, inducing fibrosis, ablating tissue or inducing inflammation. In addition, the device and methods may also be used to treat aneurysms. The device may also be used to treat hypertension, and to function as a blood pressure regulator.

摘要: An implantable stent having surface features adapted to promote an organized growth pattern of infiltrating cells when implanted in a tubular organ is provided. The surface features comprise depressions, pores, projections, pleats, channels or grooves in the stent body and are designed to increase turbulence or stagnation in the flow of a liquid, such as blood through the stent, and/or to promote the growth of infiltrating cells in an organized pattern. Alternatively, the invention stent can be populated with living cells prior to implant and can be heatable from an external source of energy, thereby inducing production of therapeutic bioactive agents from ingrowing cells. The invention also provides an implantable heatable stent for transcutaneously monitoring the flow of fluid through a lumen into which the stent is implanted by measuring the rate at which the heated stent cools in response to blood flow when the source of heat is removed.

摘要: An instrument for achieving rapid hemostasis at the conclusion of a catheterization procedure comprises a device for injecting a fluid hemostatic agent into a puncture wound that is operatively associated with a conventional introducer sheath component of the introducer used to gain access to a blood vessel using the Seldinger technique. The hemostatic agent injection device includes a tubular member that can be concentrically disposed with a tubular introducer sheath so as to be slidable therealong and where the injection device includes a hemostatic agent inlet port at a proximal end thereof and an ejection port at a distal end, the two ports being interconnected by a lumen. In a first embodiment, the hemostatic agent injection device is adapted to coaxially surround the introducer sheath and in an alternate embodiment, the injection device is coaxially disposed within the lumen of the introducer sheath.

摘要: A medical device is provided having a needle or a catheter, insertable into a living body, which defines a plurality of holes in fluid communication with a central lumen. The holes may be of various patterns located and angled to create a desired injectate cloud pattern when an injectate is forced through the central lumen and through the plurality of holes. One embodiment provides various designs including a moveable sheath or stylet used to selectively occlude one or more of the holes while in use, thereby providing an operating physician a way to manipulate the cloud pattern anytime during the introduction of the injectate. A reducer may be used in conjunction with these needles which provides an increased degree of control when injecting very small quantities of fluid.

摘要: A method that electrically stimulates a heart muscle to alter the ejection profile of the heart, to control the mechanical function of the heart and reduce the observed blood pressure of the patient. The therapy may be invoked by an implantable blood pressure sensor associated with a pacemaker like device. In some cases, where a measured pretreatment blood pressure exceeds a treatment threshold, a patient's heart may be stimulated with an electrical stimulus timed relative to the patient's cardiac ejection cycle. This is done to cause dyssynchrony between at least two cardiac chambers or within a cardiac chamber, which alters the patient's cardiac ejection profile from a pretreatment cardiac ejection profile. This has the effect of reducing the patient's blood pressure from the measured pretreatment blood pressure.
