    摘要: Disclosed is a bone fixation device of the type useful for connecting two or more bones or bone fragments together or connecting soft tissue or tendon to bone. The device comprises an elongate body having a distal anchor thereon. An axially moveable proximal anchor is carried by the proximal end of the fixation device, to accommodate different bone dimensions and permit appropriate tensioning of the fixation device. A sleeve can surround at least a portion of the bone fixation device to promote bone in-growth with or at the bone joint or fracture to facilitate fusion of the bone segment.

    摘要: A method of preparing a porous article is provided. The method includes: contacting a porous substrate with a first reactant that enters pores of the substrate; and contacting the porous substrate bearing the first reactant with a second reactant that is capable of reacting with the first reactant in an interfacial polymerization reaction; the amounts of first and second reactant being selected such that there occurs no, or substantially no, closing of pores of the substrate by the formed polymer. The invention also provides a porous article bearing a compound which is photochemically reactive and capable of undergoing a substantially non-reversible chemical transformation upon exposure to ultra-violet, visible or near infra-red irradiation. The photochemically reactive compound can be derivatized by irradiation and further reaction to provide a wide variety of useful membranes, for example, for microfiltration or for biochemical reactions and separations.

    摘要: Biomedical materials are encapsulated in ionically crosslinked polymer capsules, preferably alginate microcapsules. The alginate capsules are then subjected, in a liquid vehicle, to an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and an initiator, to induce polymerization of the unsaturated monomer and therey enhance the strength of the capsule wall. The microcapsules can be after-treated with, for example, polysine and alginate to reduce their tendency to elicit an immune response if implanted in an animal. The invention extends to the microcapsules and also to a method of treating or preventing medical conditions in an animal particularly a human, by implanting microcapsule containing biomedical material in the animal.
