摘要: A method of defining a pattern of coating fluid on a surface includes introducing coating fluid containing microspheres onto a surface of an applicator roll, wherein the topography of the applicator roll surface comprises at least one longitudinally extending circumferential, helical groove portion which is sized to at least partially receive the microspheres of the coating fluid therein, and at least one circumferential, longitudinally extending smooth surface portion. The method further includes engaging the applicator roll surface with a doctor blade to remove coating fluid from the smooth surface portions thereof and to limit the amount of microspheres advanced past the doctor blade by the helical groove portion of the applicator roll surface. Thus, a pattern of coating fluid containing microspheres remains on the applicator roll surface which is defined by the helical groove portion thereon and is formed to define at least one stripe of coating fluid containing microspheres. The pattern of coating fluid is transferred from the applicator roll surface to a moving web by a reverse kiss coating.

摘要: An apparatus that comprises a body including a reservoir adapted for receiving a quantity of fluid and a plurality of fluid distribution channels each having a length and a cross-sectional area and being in fluid communication with and extending from the reservoir from a first end and terminating at a second, distal end in an orifice. The apparatus further comprises a distribution chamber in the body for commonly receiving the fluid exiting each of the orifices, for merging the fluid exiting each of the orifices into at least one continuous coating stream, and for equalizing the pressure of the fluid, the distribution chamber having a first side in fluid communication with the plurality of fluid distribution channels and a second side that is open to allow the fluid to exit the body for uniform distribution onto the web. In addition, the apparatus comprises a smoothing surface on the body adjacent the second side of the distribution chamber to smooth the fluid on the moving web as the fluid exits the second side of the distribution chamber and is deposited on the moving web and a fluid supply means for supplying fluid to the reservoir and for maintaining the fluid under pressure in the reservoir, whereby the fluid moves under pressure from the reservoir through the fluid distribution channels to the first side of the distribution chamber, through the distribution chamber to exit the second side of the distribution chamber, and onto the moving web.

摘要: An adhesive coated article comprises a layer of microsphere adhesive onto a portion of at least one major surface of a substrate. The microspheres in the adhesive are obtained as the reaction product of (a) at least one alkyl (meth)acrylate ester wherein the alkyl group contains four to about 14 carbon atoms, preferably four to about 10 carbon atoms and (b) a comonomer(s). The comonomer may be a nonpolar, ionic, polar comonomer or mixtures of such monomers. This microsphere adhesive either contains a (meth)acrylamide comonomer or a polyacrylamide material is post-added to the microsphere adhesive. The adhesive exhibits a lower than expected adhesion to coated papers without sacrificing the adhesion to standard uncoated (bond) papers and preferably, the 90° peel adhesion, as measured on Kromkote® paper (used as an industry standard) is in the range of 20 to 250 grams/inch.
