There are provided novel triene hydrocarbons, having at least two conjugated double bonds, and being of the general formula IN WHICH A is a radical consisting of a ring containing an endomethylene group; B may be both a linear alkadiene radical and a substituted and unsubstituted alkene or cycloalkene radical; Ro may be hydrogen, an aryl or an alkyl radical, n is a number ranging from 0 to 3; and m is 0 or 1. If n is not 0, m is 0; if n is 0, m is 0 or 1.

Triene hydrocarbons containing two conjugated double bonds, represented by the formula: WHEREIN R1, R2, R3, R4, R and R'' may be hydrogen, alkyl or aryl radicals, and which may be prepared through a Diels-Alder reaction between a cyclopentadiene and (a) a dihalide-alkenyl compound, followed by dehydrohalogenation with basic agents, or (b) esters of fumaric or maleic acid, followed by reaction with a Grignard''s reagent and then by dehydration of the alcohol, are disclosed.

A terpolymer-diene composition that is readily curable with conventional vulcanizing agents is provided by preparing a mixture of diene polymer or copolymer with an olefinic terpolymer which includes at least one GROUP DIRECTLY BOUND TO TWO CARBON ATOMS, EACH OF WHICH IS CHARACTERIZED BY ETHYLENIC UNSATURATION, WHEREIN R1 is a hydrocarbon radical.

NOVEL VULCANIZABLE AMORPHOUS TERPOLYMERS ARE DISCLOSED WHICH COMPRISE TWO ALPHA-OLEFINS AND A POLYENE CONTAINING AN ALKYLIDENE GROUP CONJUGATED WITH A DOUBLE BOND OF A RING WHICH IS A MEMBER OF AN ENDOCYCLIC SYSTEM. THE PROCESS FOR PREPARING THESE TERPOLYMERS IS ALSO DISCLOSED.

A method is disclosed for the polymerization of isobutylene and, in particular, the copolymerization of isobutylene and isoprene, by contacting the monomers with a catalyst system constituted by (a) an organoaluminum compound (e.g., Al(C2H5)2Cl) and (b) an oxide or anhydride of an element belonging to Group VI B or VII B of the periodic system (e.g., SO2), in a liquid reaction medium, wherein the molar ratio of compound (b) to compound (a) is less than 1, at a temperature in the range of about -40* to +15*C.

A method is described whereby olefin terpolymers, consisting of ethylene, an alpha olefin and a polyene having in the molecule, in addition to the double bond participating in the formation of the macromolecule, at least one conjugated double bond system, are stabilied against oxidative aging without destroying their characteristic high vulcanization rate by reacting them with a dienophilic agent represented by one of the following formulae:
WHEREIN R and R6 may be an alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical having up to 8 carbon atoms, R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 may be hydrogen or alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radicals having up to 8 carbon atoms, the R1-R2 and R-R pairs may be divalent radicals forming condensed rings.
