A vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion is disclosed, comprising a vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer composed of from 10 to 40% by weight of an ethylene unit and from 90 to 60% by weight of a vinyl acetate unit and an emulsifying dispersant in an amount of from 2.5 parts by weight or more but less than 5.0 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the vinyl acetate unit, and having a mean particle size of not larger than 0.9 .mu.m and a solids content of from 65 to 75% by weight, wherein the emulsifying dispersant contains from 1.0 to 1.9 parts by weight of partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol prepared so as to have an average polymerization degree of from 300 to 1,000 and from 1.0 to 3.0 parts by weight of a polyoxyethylene nonionic surface active agent having an HLB of from 16.5 to 17.5 per 100 parts by weight of the vinyl acetate unit. A process for producing the vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer is also disclosed.

An improved process for producing an aqueous emulsion of a vinyl chloride/vinyl ester/ethylene copolymer having a small heat fluidity and excellent strength which comprises continuously adding a solution of a specific polybasic acid polyallyl ester in the vinyl chloride and/or vinyl ester and further at least 60% by weight of the vinyl chloride and vinyl ester to the polymerization system during the polymerization reaction. The copolymer thus produced has a large benzene-insoluble part and the aqueous emulsion thereof is stable and is useful as an adhesive, as for paint compositions, or as a binder for fibers and papers.

A binder composition is disclosed, which comprises:(A) a copolymer emulsion which contains as its essential ingredients vinyl acetate, ethylene, and a monomer represented by the formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is H or CH.sub.3 ; and R.sub.2 is H or an alkyl group having not more than 5 carbon atoms, the proportions of the respective ingredients being within the range of 55-96.5/3-40/0.5-5 on a weight basis;(B) a formaldehyde-free nitrogen-containing glyoxal resin;(C) a metal salt catalyst; and optionally(D) a higher alcohol sulfuric acid ester-based surfactant.Nonwoven fabrics and impregnated papers using the binder composition are also disclosed. The binder composition exhibits not only high resistance to water and solvents but also low residual free formaldehyde level, with an improvement in foamability being optionally attainable.

In the process for producing the aqueous emulsion of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/ethylene terpolymer by polymerizing vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and ethylene in an aqueous dispersion system under ethylene pressure in the presence of an emulsifier and/or protective colloid using a radical initiator, the improvement which comprises adding vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate to said aqueous dispersion system at substantially fixed rates while maintaining a required amount of unreacted vinyl acetate in the system, and, after completion of addition of vinyl chloride, adding additional vinyl acetate of 3 to 20% by weight based on the total amount of vinyl acetate which has been added until that time and continuing the polymerization until the concentration of vinyl acetate in the system is decreased to 1% by weight or less, wherein the volume of the aqueous dispersion system is at least 50% by volume based on the volume of the reactor when addition of the additional vinyl acetate is completed. By this process, the amount of unreacted vinyl chloride in said aqueous emulsion can be decreased to a large extent.

A process for producing an aqueous dispersion of vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer containing an epoxide resin, which comprises emulsion-copolymerizing vinyl acetate, wherein an epoxide resin is dissolved, and ethylene at a pH value of 3 to 7 so that the ratio of vinyl acetate to ethylene is 60-95 : 40-5 by weight and the content of the epoxide resin is 0.5 to 60% by weight on the basis of the total weight of the solid resin components. The aqueous dispersion is useful as a two-pack type adhesive or coating composition in combination with a curing agent.
