There are herein disclosed an olefin copolymer which comprises an olefin unit and a diolefin unit and in which a weight-average molecular weight is in the range of 200 to 800,000, the content of the diolefin unit is in the range of 0.002 to 30 mol%, and a ratio TUS/DOU between the total content of unsaturated groups observed in a molecular chain (TUS mol%) and the content of the diolefin unit (DOU mol%) is in the range of 0.001 to 200; an olefin graft copolymer obtained by the graft polymerization of this olefin copolymer and an olefin; a hydrogenated olefin copolymer and olefin graft copolymer thereof; and a process for preparing these copolymers.These olefin copolymers are excellent in molding/working properties and have a good thermal stability, transparency and uniformity. Therefore, they are useful as a high-performance VLDPE, LDPE, L-LDPE and HDPE, and further useful as a novel branched propylene polymer, a thermoplastic elastomer, a compatibilizing agent for other resins, and the like.

An olefin polymer is prepared by homopolymerizing an olefin or copolymerizing two different olefins or an olefin and another polymerizable unsaturated compound in the presence of a polymerization catalyst containing (A) a transition metal compound represented by the formula (I): CpML.sub.x-1 (I) wherein M is a metallic element of Groups 3 to 10 of the Periodic Table or a metallic element of the lanthanide series; Cp is a cyclic compound group having a cyclopentadienyl skeleton of 5 to 30 carbon atoms; L is R', OR', SR', SO.sub.3 R'N'R'R", PR'R", wherein R' and R" are each a C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbon group or a silyl group, NO.sub.2, a halogen atom, a 1-pyrrolyl group or a 1-pyrrolidinyl group, with the proviso that at least one of the L groups is OR', SR', N'R'R" or PR'R", wherein R' and R" are each a C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbon group or a silyl group; and x is a valence number of M, and when a plurality of L's are present, the respective L's may be the same or different, and (B) an aluminoxane, wherein the molar ratio of the component (B)/component (A) (in terms of the metallic atoms) is in the range of 2 to 500.

A film formed of an ethylenic copolymer having Mw/Mn of 1.5 to 4, Mw of 3,000 to 1,000,000, and a resin density of 0.85 to 0.95 g/cm3. In the copolymer compositional distribution curve, the relationship between the half width at the half maximum [W/2] of the Gaussian distribution curve, and the average, n, of short-chain branches in the copolymer satisfies the equation, 0.704+0.147n≦W/2≦−0.055+0.577n. The tear strength (TS, kgf/cm) of the copolymer satisfies equations, TS≧131.5−155×log[{(B+C+D)/A}+0.1], and 0.1≦(B+C+D)/A≦1 where A is the area surrounding the Gaussian distribution curve and the base line of the compositional distribution curve; B is the area surrounding the compositional distribution curve, the curve obtained through Gaussian distribution approximation, and the base line, B being at an elution temperature higher than 32° C.; C is the area surrounding the essential peak, Gaussian distribution approximation curve, and the base line; and D is the area surrounding the compositional distribution curve and the base line and falling within an elution temperature range between 25 and 32° C. indicating a high branch component.

Ethylene copolymers are disclosed herein which are each derived from ethylene and an olefin of C.sub.3 to C.sub.20 and in which any quaternary carbon atom is not present in a polymeric main chain; the activation energy (Ea) of melt flow is in the range of 8 to 20 kcal/mol; and (1) a ratio between a Huggins coefficient (k.sup.1) of the copolymer and a Huggins coefficient (k.sup.2) of a straight-chain ethylene polymer having the same intrinsic viscosity meets the equation 1.12 0.5+0.125.times.log Mw. These ethylene copolymers are different from a usual HDPE, L-LDPE and LDPE, and they are characterized in that working properties are excellent, and physical properties such as density, melting point and crystallinity can be controlled.

There are disclosed a styrenic block copolymer having a reduced viscosity of 0.01 to 20 dl/g (0.05 g/l in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene at 135.degree. C.) which comprises highly syndiotactic styrenic-polymer segments and 10.sup.-4 to 10 mol % of heteroatom-containing styrenic polymer segments; a resin composition comprising the above styrenic block copolymer and a thermoplastic resin, an inorganic filler or an organic filler; a multi-layer material comprising at least one layer composed of the above styrenic block copolymer or the above resin composition; and a process for producing the above styrenic block copolymer which comprises polymerizing a styrenic monomer in the presence of a specific catalyst and adding a heteroatom-containing styrenic monomer to successively proceed with copolymerization reaction. The above-disclosed styrenic block copolymer and the resin composition exhibit excellent compatibility and adhesivenesss, and the multi-layer material is expected to find a wide range of applications in automobile parts, electrical and electronic parts as well as film, sheet, etc.

There is provided a process for producing a styrenic graft copolymer which comprises coplymerizing a styrenic monomer and a styrenic monomer having a hydrocarbon radical with an unsaturated bond in the presence of a catalyst comprising as primary ingredient (A) a transition metal compound and (B) a contact product of an organoaluminum compound and a condensation agent or (C) a compound which produces an ionic complex by reacting with the above-mentioned transition metal compound and subsequently graft polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer onto the resultant styrenic copolymer.The above-described styrenic graft copolymer is greatly improved in terms of compatibility, adhesivity, coatability and wettability while preserving heat resistance and chemical resistance thereof, and thus effective as a variety of constructional materials and compatibilizing agents. Furthermore, the composition or multi-layer material comprising the above-mentioned styrenic graft copolymer is widely utilized in a variety of application field including film, sheet, especially stampable sheet, container, packaging material, automobile parts, electrical and electronic parts, etc.

There are here disclosed a propylene block copolymer comprising (A) 50 to 95 wt % of a specific propylene polymer block which contains a propylene unit or the propylene unit and 4 wt % or less of an olefin unit having 2 to 8 carbon atoms and (B) 50 to 5 wt % of an ethylene-propylene copolymer block containing 20 to 90 wt % of an ethylene unit, 0.001 to 15.0 wt % of a unit derived from a diolefin being contained in at least one of the components (A) and (B), a reduced viscosity at a concentration of 0.05 g/dl measured in decalin at 135.degree. C. being in the range of 0.01 to 30 dl/g; its preparation process; a hydrogenated copolymer obtained from the propylene block copolymer; and a modified copolymer obtained by introducing a functional group into at least 5% of unsaturated bonds of the copolymer. The above-mentioned copolymer can inhibit the formation of a gel, is excellent in balance between stiffness and impact resistance, has a good moldability, and possesses an unsaturated group useful for a modification reaction. In addition, the copolymer is excellent in adhesive properties, printability, hydrophilic nature, polymer modifying properties, antistatic properties and flame resistance.
