The changing rate of the rotational speed of the engine and the transmission torque of the driving force transmission apparatus are detected, and the detected transmission torque and the product of the detected engine speed changing rate and a predetermined value are added so that the resulting sum is detected as an engine torque. The torque capacity of each the frictional engagment means is controlled in accordance with the detected sum. Thus, the automatic transmission is improved in follow-up performance and stability.
