A method for indexing and coding element information of at least one biological element provided on a microarray chip thereby identifying the microarray chip. Some of the element spots arranged on the microarray chip are used as index spots to be selectively provided with at a detective colorant. By doing so, the microarray chip is specified, and the element information as well as experimental information of the chip is automatically managed.

The present invention aims at producing a biochip by an inkjet system without wasting a DNA solution. A biochip-producing solution is prepared to contain a combination of a DNA solution 6 to be spotted on a plate 5 and a low-cost buffer solution 7 to be remained in the device after the production. The buffer solution 7 used has a different specific gravity from that of the DNA solution 6 and thus is not mixed therewith.

The present invention provides a hybridization detection method capable of quantitatively determining the degree of the hybridization between a sample biopolymer and a probe biopolymer. In the method, the amount of a fluorescently labeled probe immobilized on a substrate as a spot is quantitatively determined by determining the fluorescence emitted from a fluorescent material labeling the probe, and the amount of a fluorescently labeled sample hybridized to the probe is quantitatively determined by determining the fluorescence emitted from the fluorescent material labeling the sample. The difference between the amount of the probe and the amount of the sample is normalized with the amount of the probe. Based on the normalized value, the amount of the sample hybridized to the probe can be determined relative to the amount of the probe spotted on the substrate.

The present invention detects and quantities only specific hybridization bindings. A biochip 10 which is spotted with a plurality of probe biopolymers is accommodated in a container 20 into which a washing solution is supplied from a liquid supplying unit 23. A heat block 31 controls the temperature of the biochip according to a predetermined time pattern. A pickup unit 55 picks up an image of the spot surface of the biochip at predetermined pickup intervals. The plurality of images picked up with the pickup unit are stored in a computer 40. By analyzing the images for individual spots, hybridization can be detected with high reliability for every spots without being influenced by optimal hybridization temperatures which differ depending upon the types of probes on the spots.

The apparatus for reading a luminescence pattern is equipped with a stage on which the sample to be read is mounted. A photoreceptor disk is installed in the lower part of the stage and scans and condenses light from the luminescent pattern of the sample at positions determined by the rotation of a rotary plate. A transport mechanism causes the stage and the photoreceptor disk to undergo relative motion. An optical guide part guides the light from the luminescent pattern to a photoelectric converter. The optical guide part may include mirrors or one or more optical fibers. The photoelectric converter converts the light into an electrical signal. A controller controls how scanning is performed by the photoreceptor disk and transport mechanism and generates a read scanning position signal. A data processor performs data processing by converting the electrical signal into a digital signal and obtains a scanning position signal from the controller. Additionally, a laser light source may be used to shine laser light onto an electrophoresis gel of the sample.

A scanning apparatus for scanning and reading a luminescent pattern of a sample in a flat-plate shape, having a placing member for placing the sample as an object for reading; a light condensing member for condensing light emitted from the luminescent pattern of the sample; a movement member for moving the light condensing member relative to the placing member; a light receiving member for dividing the light of the luminescent pattern of the sample condensed by the light condensing member into predetermined segments and receiving the light by scanning the light from the segments in a one-dimensional way; a photoelectrical conversion member for converting optical signals of the light received by the light receiving member into electrical signals; a control member for controlling a scan by the light receiving member in accordance with the electrical signals from the photoelectrical conversion member; and a data processing member for converting the electrical signals from the photoelectrical conversion member into digital signals and reconfiguring an image from the optical signals of the light from the segment received selectively in a one-dimensional way. The scanning apparatus can likewise scan and read a non-luminous or less luminous pattern of a sample by allowing light from a plane light source to transmit through the pattern of the sample.
